So Long, Sanjaya

It was fun while it lasted. Sanjaya Malakar, young American Idol contestant, was great for a laugh and gave us all “Something to Talk About” even before his Tuesday night performance fell flat with judges. But, for many weeks now, the consensus opinion has been that the young singer overstayed his Idol welcome. Despite the combined efforts of the Vote for the Worst web site and radio shock jock Howard Stern’s pro-Sanjaya-for-Idol campaign, the most popular contestant to ever grace the Idol stage finally fell from grace during last night’s Wednesday results show. The news was met with smiles from Simon Cowell, who went far enough to say in an interview that he would quit his judging job if Malakar won the title of American Idol. An obviously fed up Cowell soundly and roundly bashed Malakar’s rendition of the Bonnie Raitt hit earlier this week, saying it was “horrendous” and as bad a performance as the ones they see at the very beginning of each new season of Idol. In his usual concise fashion, Simon Cowell addressed America and more or less told them to cut it out. “It was funny for a while, but enough is enough,” was the gist of Cowell’s comments. After this word on high from everyone’s favorite judge, Malakar’s votes considerably dropped…and Sanjaya was dropped out of the competition as a result. During his tearful good-bye, Sanjaya changed the lyrics of his song, beseeching fans and critics alike to talk of something other than hair. Okay…how about bad singing?

Mark Burnett’s Pirate Adventure
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Survivor,
Ahoy Mateys… ‘Tis time for Survivor on the high seas. Aarrggh! The latest Mark Burnett reality series, Pirate Master, will take place, in part, on a big ‘ole pirate ship. The show will begin on May 31st at 8 p.m., the same date that Survivor debuted seven years ago. “This is high stakes, high seas, high adventure and the life of a pirate,” Burnett said. “It’s a huge—and hard—adventure, with jumping off waterfalls, swimming up canyon lakes and crossing mud-filled jungles.” This series will follow 16 people as they search the island of Dominica for treasure. $1 million of treasure, to be exact. The booty will be located in different locations to spice things up, as Burnett says, “Every week there’s treasure, and it’s worth a lot of money. Most reality competitions finalize with somebody getting half-a-million or $1 million. In this case, it’s spread each week!” To feel the part, the contestants will wear pirate costumes during their 33 day adventure. That Mark Burnett is a genius—using the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to fuel the success of his latest production.

Another Week, Another Idol Dream Shattered
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Features, Gossip,
When it comes to the singers on American Idol, everyone is an armchair judge. Though even the most avid fans will admit that sometimes Simon Cowell is a little cruel and unusual with contestants, he is also usually right in what he says. Last week’s elimination round saw the end to long-legged Haley Scarnato, whom Simon said during the first weeks of competition was “forgettable.” During her last few weeks on the show, it wasn’t Hayley’s voice that got notice from judges and fans alike – it was what she had going on (or off) below the waist. Fans weren’t the only ones noticing how skimpy Hayley’s outfits became – even Simon Cowell said it was a good idea for her to show off those legs. Hayley spoke about Simon’s comments and her own wardrobe choices to Ryan Seacrest during his radio show: “It’s just a costume, I would never wear that out on the street or anything…If my dad can handle it and my fiancé can handle it, then I’m not overstepping anything.” But it is interesting to note that Hayley, whether intentionally or otherwise, took the advice of the trio who host TVGuide Channel’s Idol Chat. On the air, hosts stated that Hayley’s got great legs – “she should show them off.” The very next week, Hayley was doing just that. Could be a coincidence. What’s not coincidental was Hayley’s elimination, which occurred after her rendition of “Turn the Beat Around” last week. Her departure has led to all sorts of conjecture on which Idol will be the next to get the boot.

Simon Cowell’s Controversial Eye Rolling
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,
I guess I must have missed it during American Idol last night, but Simon Cowell rolled his eyes during the critique of Chris Richardson. Nothing unusual there, however, it happened right after Chris sent out a prayer to Virginia Tech. This morning, the Internet was buzzing with Cowell’s inappropriate behavior. In his defense, Simon said he was responding to the comment that Richardson said about singing nasal-y. He was discussing it with Paula and rolling his eyes, but the camera caught Simon in mid-eye roll when Richardson mentioned Virginia Tech. It begs the question: is Simon Cowell really that cold-hearted of a person? On Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, Seacrest said, “We’ve got to clear this up. There are these people on the Internet trying to make something of this story, and let’s just be honest, no human being would be that disrespectful to anybody involved in that awful tragedy.” Cowell responded, “No, of course not… The truth was that I had switched off at that point. I was ... saying to Paula, ‘What does he mean he was singing nasal-y on purpose?’ I didn’t understand what he was saying.” I’m willing to give Simon the benefit here—while he plays a meanie on TV, I don’t think he is that hard hearted.

American Idol: Season 6 Finals - Week Six
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Features,
Up until now, the contestants had only proven to be ho-hum when it came to performing genre music. So needless to say—my expectations for tonight were very low. But were the singers able to get a least a little down and country with the help of Martina McBride? Read on!

Rock Star Supernova on the Rocks?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Rock Star, Gossip, Rumors,
The second edition of Rock Star seemed destined for crappiness as soon as they crowned Lukas Rossi their lead singer. The search for the lead singer of a new band, Supernova, started last year, and by the end of the show there were promises for a big tour kicking off on New Year’s eve. An entertainment news program reported that guitarist Gilby Clarke left the group, but Clarke says “I have not left Rock Star Supernova. We just finished the tour. I don’t know where they got that from. I did an interview with ET Canada, and we talked about the future of the band, but I never said I’ve left the band.” Whether the band will make it, well, weak concert sales and bad reviews for their debut album don’t bode well. Add to that the name issue, although Rossi said, “There will be a name change… the best is yet to come.” My bet is the breakup is yet to come. I’m telling you, they should have chosen Toby.

Three in Line for “Price is Right”
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Reality, Cable, CBS, Syndication,
The hunt for the next Bob Barker is underway, with three finalists vying for the coveted Price is Right hosting gig. Wouldn’t it be funny if one of the choices were Sanjaya Malakar? I kid. Really though, the three contenders are Mark Steines from Entertainment Tonight, Todd Newton of E!, and uber-tan guy George Hamilton. Other reports are saying that John O’Hurley, of Dancing with the Stars, is also in the running. The search has been going on for quite some time, but the buzz is that CBS will announce the new host in mid-May. Bob Barker is taping his last Price Is Right show in June, after 35 years on the job. It makes me wonder if they’ll do a whole overhaul on the show, with new games and sets. Personally, I think the cheesy stuff should continue because that’s what made Price is Right such a game show institution. I mean, can you imagine this show without Plinko?

The Herve (Her-vay) Report: REGIS!!!
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Reality, ABC, HBO, Commercials, The Sopranos, Editorial, Spoilers,
The Herve (Her-vay) Report will take a look at the television industry and anything Kimberly Stewart tookis juicy in that all-consuming world of entertainment. And just like its namesake, the underrated and undersized Herve Villechaize, the report will be short and sweet, tackling a couple of topics and hitting you harder than a headbutt from Mr. Villechaize to the, well, we’ll call them the “crazies.”
Your Calendars!
Regis Philbin, the constant professional, will be making his return to HIS show (get out of the way, pretty boy Consuelos), “Live With Regis and Kelly” on April 26th after having triple bypass surgery about a month ago. The 75-year-old Philbin is most definitely a badass for wanting to come back to the daily grind and match wits with co-host, Kelly Ripa. So, give your props to the O.G.
The Men of Miami Will Feel the Heat
Okay, read Wendy Michaels’ post on what I call, “Menudo’s Back (And I Don’t Mean ...Side).” Want to know what I think? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Can’t we just leave it alone? Do we really need to find the next Menudo? What boy band from back in the day will be revisited with a lame reality show? Please don’t let it be “Newer Edition.” Please! Okay, wait, if Bobby Brown could host it and he’s really messed up, and by this I mean “high,” then okay I can go for it - only hilarity can ensue.
Wait, is Brown even NOT incarcerated to do this?
Aw, Shhhhhhh… It’s The Sopranos
Last night’s episode kicked butt! Thank goodness the violence is back!!! Okay, the ubiquitous SPOILER ALERT… seriously turn back before it’s too late. The New York mob is just a straight up mess, especially now that Johnny Sack died of the cancer while doing his bid in the big house. I loved the cameo of Sydney Pollack, but I was half-expecting him to critique Vince Curatola’s way of acting ala Pollack’s Cingular commercial you see in movie theatres. Anyway, who DOESN’T think that Christopher is going to go for Tony’s seat of power? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Simon Cowell Names His Five Idol Faves
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,
No, Simon isn’t picking out his “myFaves” for T Mobile, but he is naming the singers he thinks are the top five in this year’s American Idol cast. The judge everyone loves to hate says this year’s Idols are “not a great cast,” and “not the best bunch of kids we’ve ever had,” but one of them is still going to win – whatever Cowell thinks. He says the race is very close this season, however, and names his top five favorites as Blake, Chris R., Jordin, LaKisha, and Melinda. These singers are often among the top vote-grabbers every week. But is Simon wrong this time? While Cowell has rarely predicted the winner, Bill Tancer from Hitwise has, according to the Boston Globe. Last year he used search engine data from sites like Google to predict the winner, and this year has named Sanjaya as the front runner in the contest – by more than 2 to 1. It’s true the young contestant has garnered more media attention than most, and is searched online more often than any other Idol on this current season or any other, even past American Idol winners.

Reality Show Searches for Next Menudo
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, FOX, American Idol, Cable/Satellite,
Remember Menudo, the Puerto Rican boy band from the 80s? You may or may not recall that Ricky Martin got his start with this group—the band had a revolving roster which replaced members once they got too old, too tall, or their voice changed. The group lasted through the years, changing the name in the late 90s to MDO. Now, Menudo has jumped on the reality series bandwagon with an American Idol-style competition to choose its next members. Auditions are now underway, with the first set of kids heard in Miami. Serving as judges are Johnny Wright, who managed New Kids on the Block, ‘NSync and the Backstreet Boys, as well as Howie Dorough, one of the Backstreet Boys. “We’re going to make it a little different than it was before,” Wright said. “The beat is going to be the beats of the street now — club, hip-hop and rock. It’s not going to be something that’s pigeonholed.” The Road to Menudo will air on MTV Tr3s, MTV’s bilingual Latin-American channel, next month.
