American Idol 8: First Winners Speak

Danny Gokey Alexis Grace Michael Sarver

is underway, replete with live performances and suspenseful eliminations. But for the next two weeks, three contestants can breathe easy. Alexis Grace, Danny Gokey and Michael Sarver have made it all the way to the Top 12.

What do they think of that?

recently spoke to reporters about her size (“I might weigh ninety-nine pounds. Maybe ninety-eight. And I would say I’m five feet tall”), her song choice (“I knew I could sing in that range, and I feel connected to her music, so I went with it!”) and being among the first to make it into the Idol dozen.

Grace said the next two rounds of singers “could have an advantage, but they could also feel a lot of pressure. It could go both ways.” When asked about highly talked-about contender , Grace replied “that girl, she is determined, and she is going to be something some day. She is hilarious,” the diminutive singer added.

talked about the judges, the home life he misses, and how he might stack up vote-wise against Danny Gokey. When asked about new addition Kara DioGuardi, Sarver answered, “she brings an incredible mind for music to the table.”

Sarver also expressed excitement for the Wild Card round. “Clay Aiken was a wild card,” he pointed out, “and good things come out of wild things.” Yeah, but sometimes so do rabies.

So, was Sarver or Gokey the top male vote-getter of the night. “I don’t know,” Sarver admitted. “According to some FOX News outlets, I was, but I don’t think anybody cares at this point.”

also had a few words to offer on season 8, commenting on the new changes to the format. “It’s never been harder to get in the Top 12, but yet also it’s never been easier.” Easy for him to say.  Gokey also spoke of his fans, saying “it’s an honor to see that people who I have never met want to see me succeed.”

So, who from his group should win the Wild Card round? Which of them really deserves to gain the coveted Top 12 spot? “I think they all do. I really do,” Gokey answered.
