Tampa Bay Lightning find ways to win in close games

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Steven StamkosIf the NHL playoffs began today, the Tampa Bay Lightning would enter as the fifth-seeded team in the east, taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Only two Eastern Conference playoff teams have scored more goals this season than the Lightning, but none have given up nearly as many as they have. In fact, with 216 goals for and 222 against, the Lightning are the only of the top eight teams in the east to give up more goals than they’ve scored.

Ilya KovalchukWe’re roughly halfway into the NHL season (the first group of all stars were announced, so it’s fair), which makes it time to take a look at the best and the worst in the league to this point. Who has performed above and below expectations, and who has remained par for the course so far? You have the usual suspects atop the standings, whether it’s Sidney Crosby or his Penguins, but where is Tampa Bay right now if not for Steven Stamkos?

Yzerman moving to Tampa

Steve Yzerman & Jeff VinikThe Red Wing poster boy is swapping in his colors for Lightning silver. The announcement is somewhat surprising because since his retirement in 2006, many thought his appointment as VP of Hockey Operations with Detroit was to be apprentice to GM Ken Holland and would serve as a replacement. But it turns out that’s not the case. Yzerman is moving south and is ready to start the next chapter of his Hall of Fame career.

Jeff VinikThe housecleaning has begun. The Tampa Bay Lightning have let go of coach Rick Tocchet and General Manager Brian Lawton and team owner Jeff Vinik has begun the search for replacements. The announcements were made over the weekend as the Lightning finished another season without an entry into the playoffs. This is the third consecutive season the Lightning have failed to make the cut, despite their 80 points being the team’s highest point total since 2006-07.

Rocket Richard race rides on

Sidney CrosbyThe goal-scoring race is at its peak. Sidney Crosby’s 49 goals has him in a slim one goal lead over two-time defending award winner Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s young phenom Steven Stamkos. All three have two games left to play. Stamkos has scored almost a quarter of Tampa Bay’s goals and that lack of scoring help has lead Tampa to finish outside of the playoffs. Meanwhile, a spread out attack from the other two clubs has each preparing for the postseason, but it’s been these three individuals who have stolen the spotlight this season.

Stamkos is just as good as the best

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Steven StamkosSteven Stamkos is on a mission. That mission is to help the Tampa Bay Lightning get a playoff spot. If he happens to win the goal-scoring title along the way, great. Stamkos scored twice against Boston on Thursday night in a 5-3 Lightning win and tied himself with two of the greatest names in hockey, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, for first on the goal-scoring list. The three are competing for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the top goal scorer in the NHL; an honor that Ovechkin has won for the last two seasons.
