Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,
Despite not having played in a game since March 17, Chicago Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco is making headlines. Turco is under investigation for allegedly wagering on Tuesday night’s Blackhawks game against the Montreal Canadiens while on the bench. A Habs fan called into a Montreal-based radio show to talk about how he and Turco made several bets about how the game would end up. After losing 2-1 in overtime, Turco paid up in several Canadian bills.

Rick DiPietro out again with busted face
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL,
Whenever it seems like things could not get worse for the New York Islanders, things get worse for the New York Islanders. The latest blow came on Friday when the team announced that top goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks. This occurred after DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, or more accurately, he got into a punch. Johnson skated the length of the ice, threw one left hook and DiPietro was finished.

Tomas Vokoun among the most underappreciated goalies in the NHL
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
You know that Martin Brodeur has been one of the best goalies of our time, and that others such as Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas are up among the top performers, but how much of the success of these three owes to the fact they play in hockey hotbeds? Compare them to one Tomas Vokoun, whose career currently with the Florida Panthers and formerly of the Nashville Predators goes largely unnoticed due to his winter home in the Sun Belt.

Tim Thomas set for record-breaking season in Boston net
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Tim Thomas is a perfect 5-0 for the Boston Bruins this year. Despite that, his team sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The problem the Bruins have at this point is Thomas’s backup, Tuukka Rask who is like a yang to Thomas’s yin. Rask is 0-2. Combined, the two goalies have given the Bruins 10 points in seven games. Talk to anyone on the Bruins and they’ll probably tell you that’s not good enough.

Robin Lehner makes unexpected NHL debut
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Ottawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner made an uncharacteristic NHL debut on Saturday night against Montreal. Lehner was recalled from Binghamton of the AHL before Saturday’s game and ended up making an appearance when he started the third period. Ottawa starting goalie Brian Elliot broke a skate between periods and the referees were not willing to wait for him to find a replacement. Lehner was thrown into net and brought his career minutes total to four minutes, 42 seconds.

Youthful Avalanche trying to turn around misfortunes
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,
The Colorado Avalanche have got young and got good. After missing the playoffs last season and not advancing past the second round since 2002, the Avs are in the final stages of a rebuild and may squeeze themselves into the playoffs, currently holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, but they do have some breathing room between them and Calgary. They’re also only five points back of third place, so things are still very much up in the air for Colorado.

Calder Memorial race is getting hot
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
This year’s NHL rookie race is heating up. With all of the hype surrounding last year’s Entry Draft and the debate about whether John Tavares or Victor Hedman would be taken first (it was Tavares by the Islanders; Hedman went second to Tampa Bay), it was the third-overall pick, Colorado’s Matt Duchene who is keeping the goal judge busy. His 21 goals and 24 assists both lead all rookies, and he’s 10 ahead of second-place Tavares on the points list.

Rookie Howard lighting up the goal crease
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
The Red Wings are in a place many teams would love to be. When it comes to goaltending, their depth runs farther than most, and while current starting goalie Jimmy Howard may not be a name you’ve heard or expected to be playing ahead of Chris Osgood, he’s not only doing it, he’s doing it well. The Red Wings rookie has a 24-14-8 record this season, which is incredible considering a year ago at this time, he was expected to be battling for the back-up role with Ty Conklin.

The greatest unknown Detroit goaltender of all time
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,
The Detroit Red Wings have a long history of excellent goaltending. If you were asked who had the best single season goals-against average in franchise history, who would you say? Terry Sawchuk? Glenn Hall? Dominik Hasek? Chris Osgood? If you were thinking along any of those lines, you’d be very wrong. The record belongs to a goaltender that set it for Detroit was known as the Red Wings; and even before they were known as the Falcons. The record belongs to Detroit Cougar netminder Clarence “Dolly” Dolson.

Conklin’s Classic streak in serious jeopardy
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, NHL,
How many people want to see Ty Conklin traded to Boston or Philadelphia before Jan. 1? Conklin, a 33-year-old native of Phoenix, Arizona, is a goaltender for the St. Louis Blues. He also has the distinction of being the only player to have played in all three outdoor NHL games. In all three, he was also not his respective team’s primary goaltender within a month of each game. If he doesn’t find a way to get himself into a Bruin or Flyer jersey by the New Year, his streak will sadly end.
