Injured Twins poised for Opening Day return

When the Minnesota Twins arrived in Florida in mid-February, they put a new spin on the purpose of the preseason. The point of Spring Training is to get back into shape after the winter, but for the Twins, it was an opportunity to recover from some serious injuries to key players. All of catcher Joe Mauer, first baseman Justin Morneau and closer Joe Nathan are back in action and look like they’ll be ready to play come Opening Day.

The Washington Nationals choose Bryce Harper with the first pick of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft

As many thought would happen, the Washington Nationals selected baseball phenom Bryce Harper with the first pick of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft. Harper has been highly-touted since last year thanks to his prodigious power and lightning-quick bat speed. He played mostly catcher in his baseball career, as well as pitched, but the Nats will use Harper as an outfielder in right field, in order to utilize his athleticism and strong arm. The 17-year-old, 6-foot-3, 205 pound also known as “Baseball’s Chosen One” according to a Sports Illustrated cover last year is represented by Scott Boras who also repped last year’s first overall pick, Stephen Strasburg, with the very same Nats team. The Nats faithful are hoping both players will lead the charge in turning things around for the organization and if they can live up to both their hype and upside, that time will come.

Woes for the O’s

Who needed a day off more than the Baltimore Orioles? Perhaps the rest of baseball. MLB’s worst team by record sat Monday after being swept for the second time this season by the Toronto Blue Jays, the team who many thought would finish behind the O’s in the standings for the first time since 2004. Instead two months into the season, the Jays are 14.5 games ahead. It’s not looking too good for the fortune-telling community.

Today is Jackie Robinson Day

Following the yearly tradition, baseball will honor the memory of Jackie Robinson today as every player league-wide will suit up wearing his famed number 42 on their backs. Today is the 63rd anniversary of Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier. The number was retired throughout baseball by Commissioner Bud Selig on the 50th anniversary when Robinson when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. You won’t be able to walk into a stadium today without being reminded of Robinson’s fantastic achievement.

Tigers get Damon, ending long offseason

Johnny Damon’s offseason has likely come to an end. MLB.com is reporting that Damon will soon likely be announced as the new left fielder of the Detroit Tigers. They won’t make the announcement until Monday or Tuesday, but by then Damon will be the proud new owner of a Tigers cap and will be paid $8 million over the next year to wear it. Damon will also find himself nicely slotted into the leadoff or second spot in the lineup.

Remember trading cards? You probably do. Those two-inch by three-inch photographs of yesteryear’s most beloved sports heroes and villains certainly had a special place in many a child’s daily activities. Trading with friends at school for your favorite player was always a thrill, but it was just as difficult to part with non-duplicates, even if it was some unknown like Bruce Hurst. Sets of trading cards were sought after with one goal in mind: collect them all.

Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is like the new kid in school with all the best toys. As the most recent man in baseball to be given the “GM” title, all eyes were on the 32-year old former scouting coordinator. However, that’s not why other GMs were interested in the kid. The fact that he held Roy Halladay, arguably the most valuable player available this offseason, made Anthopoulos and his Blackberry the most important man of the hour.

AL Silver Sluggers announced with few surprises

The American League Silver Slugger Award winners were announced recently, and six of the nine selections came out of the East, which further goes to show just how powerful – literally – this division is. The New York Yankees had repeat winners in Mark Teixeira at first-base and Derek Jeter at short. The Boston Red Sox’s Jason Bay was honored with his first, the Tampa Bay Rays’ Evan Longoria at third, and the Toronto Blue Jays each had first-timers with Aaron Hill at second and Adam Lind as the designated hitter. The rest of the league squeaked in Joe Mauer, catcher for the Minnesota Twins with his third, and Ichiro Suzuki from the Seattle Mariners and Torii Hunter from the Los Angeles Angels in outfield, with their third and first, respectively.

Canada’s team may not be for Canada’s Bay

Jason Bay has a history of success. Being a 22nd round draft pick by the Montreal Expos, not many expected much of him. He was traded from the Expos to the San Diego Padres to the Pittsburgh Pirates between 2002-2003, making his MLB debut along the way. However, 2004 was the year he made the greatest impact. He hit .282 in 120 games, and lead all rookies 26 home runs, 82 RBI, .550 slugging, 54 extra base hits and 226 total bases. His accomplishments earned him the 2004 NL Rookie of the Year Award; the first time for any Canadian. In 2008, he was traded to the Red Sox to replace Manny Ramirez, and he has fit in perfectly.

In the midst of yet another New York Yankees World Series victory, it’s near impossible to find any headlines that deal with something not covered in pinstripes. But with the 2009 MLB officially behind them, it’s time for 29 teams to say goodbye to their new free agents and start shopping around for the replacements they think they need to improve and contend in 2010. It’s business as usual for the general managers, with the Yankees taking the weekend off to celebrate, beginning with the traditional parade down the Canyon of Heroes in downtown Manhattan planned for Friday. So who exactly is available to be sought and bought before Spring Training ’10?
