Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Tomas VokounYou know that Martin Brodeur has been one of the best goalies of our time, and that others such as Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas are up among the top performers, but how much of the success of these three owes to the fact they play in hockey hotbeds? Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Pete RosePete Rose, baseball’s infamous gambler, still is not – and may never be – in the MLB Hall of Fame. But the former Cincinnati Reds player and manager will be honored by his former club for the 25th anniversary of his breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time career hits total. The Reds received permission from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to honor the disgraced hitter for just the second time since being banned in 1989. Rose missed out on the Reds honoring of the 1975 World Series champions in 2000 as well as the old-timers softball game commemorating the closing of Cinergy Field in 2002.

Luis Castillo bumping heads with the Mets after benching

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,

Luis CastilloNew York Mets second baseman Luis Castillo is unhappy with his team. Can you blame him? The 34-year-old veteran was recently replaced by rookie Ruben Tejada for the starter’s position. Castillo has been struggling somewhat this season, his numbers are down from what they’ve been in previous years, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a good major league baseball player who has not had at least one bad season to his credit, despite Castillo’s advanced age.

Nolan Ryan outbids Mark Cuban for the Texas Rangers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Front Office, MLB,

Nolan RyanThe Texas Rangers are having a pretty good season this year. The last time you probably heard somebody say that was in 1999 when the Rangers were swept by the New York Yankees in the American League Divisional Series. Since then, the Rangers plummeted in the ranks of the AL West and have slowly been climbing to get out of it. The latest chapter of Rangers history began yesterday when Nolan Ryan outbid Mark Cuban to become the newest owner of the recovering franchise.

Crawford, Rays don’t reach deal on contract extension

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Carl CrawfordThe Tampa Bay Rays were unable to reach an agreement for a contract extension with starting left fielder Carl Crawford last week, and the two sides have decided to hold off on further discussions until after the season. While this decision probably doesn’t make Rays fans happy about the future of their star outfielder, Crawford is certainly within his rights to not want to create a distraction for himself or his team for the upcoming 2010 season.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Trades,

Steve CarltonNow that the dust is starting to settle around the Roy Halladay move to Philadelphia, the breakdowns and analyses of the trades have begun to take precedence among sports headlines across North America. Halladay was revealed as the newest Phillie in a media conference on Wednesday afternoon where, for the first time, he donned his new red and white jersey. An unnoticed piece to anybody outside of Toronto’s fanbase was the large “34” on the back of the jersey.
