Gionta and the Devils advance

Perhaps the big story of the game, other than Gionta’s performance, was the dominance shown by Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. Out of 34 attempted shots by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Marty allowed just two. Brodeur was under a considerable amount of pressure, especially considering that he allowed at least two goals in each of the first five games of the series. He separated himself from the rest of the pack with this clutch performance today.

“When you’ve been through it, you just put your head down and work harder. I can’t make the bounces go my way if I don’t believe that I’m able to stop the puck,” Brodeur said. “I know when it doesn’t go well, I’ll get that criticism.”

The Devils look good going further into the playoffs. With Brodeur on top of his game it’ll be near impossible for other teams to score more than two goals. Patrick Elias also helped his team with three assists today, so with four standout Devil performances today, look for the Devils to be dangerous in the semifinals.
