Ilya Kovalchuk taking New Jersey Devils up the standings

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ilya Kovalchuk In their last 25 games, the New Jersey Devils have recorded 42 out of a possible 50 points. This is the same team that only managed 22 points in their first 41 games. If the Ilya Kovalchuk nine-figure contract situation from last summer was the definition of “ridiculous,” this current run by the Devils to make an impact in the Eastern Conference must be the meaning of “absurd.”

New Jersey Devils falling apart on and off the ice

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ilya KovalchukIt’s going to take a heck of a winning streak to turn the New Jersey Devils from this season’s biggest bust into a playoff contender – at best. After headlining a rather tame summer with the contract controversy of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Devils now find themselves competing with the New York Islanders for last place in the Eastern Conference. The two anti-giants faced off against each other on Friday afternoon and the Devils found it impossible to score on Rick DiPietro, losing 2-0.

Mike BrodeurStep aside Martin, there’s a new Brodeur in town. Distant relative Mike has made the NHL and is ready for action. Called up as an emergency replacement for injured teammate Pascal Leclaire, Brodeur has filled the backup role exceptionally, shutting out the Rangers on Jan. 14, then allowing just two goals to the Canadiens on Jan. 16. Brodeur’s only other NHL experience was his debut on Dec. 19 against the Minnesota Wild where he stopped 22 of 23 shots. He was credited with the “W” on all three occasions.

Lorne ChabotIn honor of Brodeur’s latest goaltending achievement; breaking Terry Sawchuk’s record of 103 shutouts, let’s take a look at one of the other most impressive shutouts in NHL history. The 1930s saw one of the longest playoff games ever played, and amazingly it was a 0-0 affair until the lone goal was scored. While neither of the goaltenders who played in that game are held to the same level of esteem as Brodeur and his shutouts, both will always be remembered for the heroic effort they put in for the benefit of their respective team. That, and the fact that combined they faced 207 shots while not wearing masks.

Osgood reaches milestone 50th shutout

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Chris OsgoodChris Osgood put another 29 saves onto his resume as his surging Detroit Red Wings knocked off the slumping Boston Bruins 2-0. These denials came as a part of his 394th career victory. Added to these stats is the fact that those saves added up to his 50th career shutout, a milestone that only 22 others in the NHL have achieved. Osgood’s play of late has been somewhat below what is expected of him, as the Red Wings find themselves in a four-way tie for 8th place in the Western Conference, but he was in top form during Tuesday night’s victory.
