Boston Red Sox first to reach double-digit losses

Josh BeckettThe Boston Red Sox fell to 2-10 on the season after losing a tough game to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. Adam Lind hit a controversial three-run home run in the first inning that was reversed after a replay, but that only resulted in a 7-6 loss instead. Bobby Jenks was hammered in the 7th inning, taking his first loss as a member of the Red Sox and becoming the seventh man on the staff with an “L” in just 12 games.

Things look bleak up and down the Red Sox’s lineup. Among the regulars, only Dustin Pedroia has a respectable average, hitting .348. Behind him is David Ortiz hitting .262, and the rest just get worse. The team’s .224 average is 12th in the American League. Combined they’ve only collected nine home runs, 19 doubles, two triples and five stolen bases. However, they’re third in the league with 51 walks and have the third-fewest strikeouts.

Fortunately for the Red Sox, they have Josh Beckett throwing for them on Saturday. Beckett leads the staff with a 1-1 record and a 2.08 ERA over 13 innings pitched. Unfortunately for Beckett, he has awful career numbers against the Blue Jays. In 14 starts, he’s 3-6 with a 7.03 ERA. You might think that the Red Sox have the upper hand facing lefty Jo-Jo Reyes in Fenway Park, but they only mustered two hits off of lefty Brett Cecil on Friday night. Then again, both those hits were home runs.

The Red Sox are 2-4 against the AL East this season. Losing games to out-of-division opponents is never a good thing, but the Sox can’t afford to keep losing games to division rivals. They certainly can’t and won’t continue losing five out of every six games, and the season is still young, but they need to start winning five out of six games soon, or else they may lose their anointment as best “Red Sox team ever,” and you can only guess what that title will be replaced with.
