Boston Red Sox first to reach double-digit losses

Josh BeckettThe Boston Red Sox fell to 2-10 on the season after losing a tough game to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. Adam Lind hit a controversial three-run home run in the first inning that was reversed after a replay, but that only resulted in a 7-6 loss instead. Bobby Jenks was hammered in the 7th inning, taking his first loss as a member of the Red Sox and becoming the seventh man on the staff with an “L” in just 12 games.

Jed Lowrie making the best of unique situation with the Boston Red Sox

Jed LowireJed Lowrie has been receiving some extra playing time with the Red Sox. He’s been given first base duties while Manager Terry Francona tries to figure out what to do with the vacancy created by the injury to Kevin Youkilis. Primarily a shortstop or second baseman, Lowrie has just been doing as he’s told in order to keep his team in the playoff race. The Sox remain a handful of games back of Tampa Bay and New York, but are having difficulty gaining ground.

Josh BeckettWith a 2-1 win over Oakland on Monday night, the Boston Red Sox have now won four of their last 12 games. They have fallen behind both the Yankees and the Rays in the AL East and are one more string of losses away from being out of it; considering the level of competition in their division at least. But with almost a dozen regulars out with injuries, the Red Sox are still in a surprisingly good position.

Red Sox/Yankees rivalryCould anybody else have started the 2010 MLB season? Florida against Atlanta, or Oakland versus Seattle just wouldn’t have been the same as last night’s Boston and New York matchup. These two teams have created the greatest sporting rivalry of the 21st century, what with the Yankees’ World Series wins in 2000 and 2009, Boston’s in 2004 and 2007, not to mention the “breaking of the curse”. There’s also the seemingly limitless supply of money backing these two giants in a duel to perhaps not outspend each other, but certainly outspend everybody else.

Pedroia good to go after wrist scare

Dustin PedroiaThe Boston Red Sox avoided a huge scare on Wednesday when they announced that All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s x-rays revealed no long term damage and he will be fine. Pedroia sprained his left wrist on Tuesday in a game against the Twins when he dove for a ground ball off the bat of Denard Span. Pedroia had x-rays on Wednesday morning and is already asking coach Terry Francona to get him back in the lineup for Thursday’s game against Florida.
