iPhone 3GS Getting Prepared At AT&T Distribution Center

AT&T To Upgrade to HSPA 7.2 Soon

AT&T has announced that they are upgrading their HSPA 7.2Mbps speed to their wireless network later this year, making it compatible with new smartphones and laptop express cards that will also be released around the same time. The company says that the upgrade will allow the faster access before the LTE networks merge in 2011 or 2012. They will be adopting LTE as part of the Generation Partnership Project, a collaboration of equipment makers and carriers along with Verizon Wireless and many global GSM carriers.

Palm Pre launches on June 6th for $199

It is officially official: The Palm Pre is launching on June 6th at $199.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract. The Sprint exclusive Pre will be available across the United Stats (yes, US-only for now) in Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and certain Wal-Mart locations. As far as plans are concerned, you can get the Palm Pre with Sprint’s Everything Data plan, or the Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plan. Of course, the Touchstone charging accessory will also be available for $69.99, which includes the $49.99 Touchstone dock and the $19.99 back cover for the Pre that’s required.
So there you have it, you’ll be able to get your Pre on in 20 days.

BlackBerry Popularity Tops iPhone

RIM has taken the top spot with its BlackBerry as the most popular smartphone in the first quarter of 2009. Their market share jumped 15%, giving it 50% of the market, while Apple and Palm each lost 10%. A study by NPD claims that aggressive promotions such as the “buy-one-get-one” Curve deal contributed to the popularity. The Storm came in third while the Pearl came in fourth. The G1 took the 5th spot. We expect that this may be a temporary position, as Apple will undoubtedly fight back.
[Editor: Oh, and of course, Apple didn’t do any sort of “buy one, get one” with the iPhone, which is certainly helping pad those BlackBerry numbers.]

Navigon - No More PNDs in No. America

Germany based Navigon is leaving the PND market in North America. CEO Egon Minar says that they are downsizing their Chicago office but will still take care of their existing customers with map updates, etc. Apparently they were losing money to more basic, cheaper GPS devices. Instead, they will concentrate on its mobile division by offering its technology to smartphones. They recently signed a deal to equip T-Mobile in Germany, so perhaps they will extend themselves to the states.

T-Mobile Sells 1 Million G1 Smartphones

T-Mobile is proud to announce that they have sold more than a million of their Android-powered G1 smartphones in about 6 months. Launched in October, the G1 slider with QWERTY keyboard and Google services obviously is worth the bucks that they spent on the ad campaign. Although the Storm only took half that time to reach a million and the iPhone merely a weekend, we expect that the good news will spur on Samsung, Sony Ericcson and Motorola to hop on the Android bandwagon.

A couple of days ago, the folks at Sprint invited us to take part in a Palm Pre webcast demo, along with an opportunity for Q&A. They just made the video demo available, and we think this is the best real-world demo yet that actually shows the capabilities of the Pre and Palm’s webOS. Even in the midst of the iPhone 3.0 excitement, you’ve gotta agree that Palm is making waves in the smartphone UI area. Yesterday, Apple finally unveiled the iPhone 3.0 OS. We are stilling digging deep into the update, and will be bringing you our thoughts in just a bit, but we felt that it might behoove us to let you know that you can now download the iPhone 3.0 keynote presentation directly from iTunes now, in it’s entirety
(minus the Q&A session.) Go ahead and get a first-hand look at cut, copy, and paste, MMS, global Spotlight search, and all the demos. If you aren’t a developer, then you can look forward to downloading the update in June, which will probably be alongside this years iPhone release.
