Glow Brick Lights Up Your Night
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,
Made from an actual light bulb, the Glow Brick collects energy from the sun by day and lights up your night. Each one is 3.3 x 3.3 x 5-inches, large enough to keep you completely out of the dark by glowing. The effect takes place when a small space between the container’s light bulb glass and acrylic resin shrinks during production. The photoluminescent lamp is available for $29.95. We applaud the idea that we can have a night light and conserve energy without really trying.

We don’t tell many people, but clowns creep us out, seriously. What better way to face our fears than with this 6 foot tall Animated Evil Clown with his blood-splattered costume. He will jab at whoever comes near with his knife while scary circus music plays. Sound activated, he runs on 3 AA batteries, not included, and the Fright Catalog mentions that he may come equipped with bloody
white gloves. For $89.99, we think this would be a much better watchdog than the real thing.

We haven’t been this excited since our last viewing of “Willie Wonka.” Flavorleague, a wall covering company in New Orleans, has developed scratch and sniff wallpaper. Still recovering from Katrina, the company is hard at work and recently introduced their Fruit Cocktail Collection. The Flavor Paper includes B-A-N-A-N-A-S, Cherry Forever, and Tutti Fruitti. We dig the fact that they contribute a portion of all sales to the Human Rights Campaign. We’re hoping that they will create Snozzberries to go with the rest of the collection.

This week, a hand grenade made its way to the Canadian border. Another one, which turned out to be a toy, was discovered at the McNamara Terminal at Detroit’s Metro Airport. Now you can join the group with the Hand Grenade Alarm Clock. Made of PVC, this clock has to be thrown to turn itself off. This is a perfect gift for those who want to vent their anger when disturbed first thing in the a.m. It’s available at CScout for $39.00.

Nestle Caters to Video Gamers
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Smart Home, Video Games,
What do you do to attract attention by kids that are immersed in video games and no longer watch as much TV? If you are Nestle, you produce mini-bottles of water called Aquapod just for them. Then you set up a site that they can play on, run a contest designing empty bottles, and finally, don’t forget the tie-in to Wiis with Konami’s environmentally friendly Dewy’s Adventure. At least their promotional contest, which runs through November 1, has some nice prizes such as a 6-night trip to Costa Rica or a Wii with the game included. We remember when Nestle’s Quick simply made the very best….chocolate.

That nice delay with higher temperatures has stopped the onset of evil winter so far, but it is coming nonetheless. Cozy Legs is a radiant heating panel that will help keep you warm when the temperature drops. Mount it on a cubicle wall, under your desk, or on an optional stand. The beige heater, at a size 1 x 22 x 16-inches, is available for $99.99 and the stand will set you back an additional $19.99. We think it would be a useful alternative to warming our legs by keeping them on our computer, like we did last year.

We couldn’t leave the Neiman Marcus Catalogue without including one more item that we found especially intriguing. The Swami Conversational Robot knows who you are individually, carries on conversations, develops a rapport with you, and answers questions. He has micro-camera eyes, more than 30 robotic micro motors and runs off an (included!) PC laptop. This bot makes Zoltar look like child’s play, but then he is available for about 10 times the price at $75,000.00.

We came across this site that features some of the most cleverly created pumpkins we have seen. Tom Nardone is more of an artist than a carver and we just thought we would share some of his special veggies. Extreme Pumpkins also features how-to advice, fire, light and pyrotechnics, design strategy, preservation, and what tools to use when carving. Tom’s site holds a yearly Halloween contest for other creative carvers, so feel free to send them a pic of your own jack-o-lantern this year.
(Thanks, Joyce)
