Disney to Drop Cell Phones
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Smart Home,
Disney Mobile has decided to end its branded cell phone service by the end of this year. They claim that although parents liked the concept, large retailers were hesitant to feature them in their stores. No further phones will be available for sale now but the company promises to service the handsets until December. In the future, Disney will be offering its services, such as its tracking capability, to other mobile phone carriers.
This is the second time that Disney has overstreched with bad results, the first being the dropping of their ESPN-branded cell phone service about a year ago. In fact we wondered then whether this move would cover their losses. Disney Mobile will be handing out reimbursements for those with the units as well as accessories, so contact their site if you have questions or want to transfer your number.

Philips has designed a moodlight that can create 16 million colors. The Living Color LED can be used on ceilings or floors and comes with a remote so that you can alter its hue whenever the mood strikes you. At a size of 28.8 x 22.5 x 24.4 cm and a weight of 553 g, the company claims it has an “extremely long” life with low energy usage. We wonder if that really means long enough to find all of those colors. It’s available for €149.00 (~$211.00,) but only in Germany at this point. Feel free to pick one up for us if you plan on visiting the country this Oktoberfest.

Behold the Sandwich-shaped Lunch Box
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Accessories, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Storage,
We recently told you about the Banana Guard, a plastic storage case that protects the squishy yellow fruit. What better to go with it than the self-explanatory Sandwich Shaped Lunch Box? Fortunately, the large plastic case not only holds your ham on wheat, but is big enough to hold chips and dessert too. Now if we can only find a plastic “Juice Box-Shaped Juice Box Holder”, our life would be so complete. Available for approx. $18 USD.

Designer Yuko Taguchi has created a lamp that looks like a joke, but in fact serves a purpose. Her Wind Up Lamp does just that as the key is both a switch and a timer. It runs by a spring-driven generator which produces enough power to turn on the bulb. Once it winds down, the light goes out. Although only a prototype, Yuko says that this would be a terrific device for those who read in bed but fall asleep before switching their lamps off. We also think this would definitely be a viable green alternative to current electric night lights.

Easy Link Teaches Internet to Tots
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Internet, Toys,
The Holidays are practically upon us, at least according to the Toy Industry. The last generation began using computers in grade school, and Fisher Price would like to begin this one right after potty training. Their Easy Link allows toddlers to place smart keys into a “launch pad” to hook up to kid-friendly sites such as Sesame St., PBS Kids/Dragontales, and of course Fisher Price. The nice thing about it is that it also blocks access to your hard drive and PC (not for Macs.) The system includes a USB cable and software for easy installation. Recommended for tots 3 and up, it’s available for $30.00, with other keys sold separately. Just don’t lick the Cookie Monster.

Automower Cuts, Fertilizes, and Never Complains
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Wireless / WiFi,

Cashing in on the Roomba idea is the Husqvarna Automower. The eco-friendly lawnmower from Sweden runs on batteries and is waterproof with its hidden wires safely tucked inside. With a noise level of about 63 dB, it’s quieter than most of the neighbors’ mowers that are generally around 90 to 100 dB. The Husqvana can travel up 35º inclines, turn your grass into mulch since it cuts minuscule pieces, and runs with PIN code activation on a preset timer. The company promises that it will not mow down your family pet and claims that several owners have already named theirs. That is probably because they weren’t sure how to pronounce Husqvarna.

Toilet Tattoos Cheer Up Old Bathrooms
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
We are not really into bathroom accessories, but these Toilet Tattoos made by designer Celeste Massullo attracted our eye for their originality. Made from electrostatic vinyl film, you just peel and stick. They won’t hurt the seat and are reusable. There are many varieties, from classic designs to seasonal ones, but it was the “Twinkle” seat that amused us the most. Available with 30 glittery stickers, it is intended to assist in potty training, lid lowering, and hand-eye coordination. Each of the covers are available for $9.95. We wonder if it will work on adults as well.
(Thanks, Todd)
