Walmart Starts Taking Apple Pay Today, After Eleven Years of Saying No

You know the specific flavor of checkout-line dread where you reach the terminal, hover your phone over the reader out of pure habit, and nothing happens? At Walmart, that has been the default for over a decade. Today it stops being the default.

Walmart is switching on Tap to Pay at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations starting August 24, which means Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, and any contactless card finally work at the biggest retailer in the country. The company says every U.S. store and club gets it by the end of 2026, with fuel stations following by mid-2027.

Why this took so long

Walmart spent the 2010s trying to kill Apple Pay outright. It joined a retailer consortium behind CurrentC, a QR-code payment system built specifically to route around Apple and Google. CurrentC folded in 2016. Walmart Pay, the QR-scanning feature inside the Walmart app, is the surviving piece of that strategy, and it stuck around because it kept payment data inside Walmart's ecosystem instead of Apple's.

That is a defensible business position right up until customers start abandoning carts in the aisle. Kroger caved. Home Depot caved. H-E-B caved. As recently as January of this year, Walmart was still publicly arguing that Walmart Pay was the more convenient option, which is a strange thing to claim about a system that requires you to open an app and scan a code while the person behind you sighs.

When it actually reaches your store

Today is a start date, not a finish line. According to an internal rollout memo obtained by 9to5Mac, the launch is phased state by state: Arkansas from August 24 through 31, West Coast markets in early September, and the rest of the country in waves through mid-October. So if you walk into your local Walmart tonight and the reader still ignores your phone, you are not doing it wrong. Your store just is not up yet.

The upgraded terminals handle Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch, Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, contactless credit and debit cards, and supported contactless EBT cards. You can also add your Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards to Apple Wallet.

The tell in the announcement

Here is the part worth noticing: Walmart's own press release never says the words "Apple Pay." Not once. It refers only to "contactless payment methods" and lists cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay as the company it keeps. Google published its own blog post the same day naming itself, the retailer, and the timeline. Apple has said nothing publicly. A Walmart spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that both wallets are included.

That is what a reversal looks like when nobody involved wants to call it one.

Who this actually changes things for

If you already carry a physical card, this is a modest convenience upgrade. The real beneficiaries are the people who genuinely stopped carrying cards. Federal Reserve research shows shoppers under 25 rarely use cash, and for them the phone is the wallet. For points-and-miles people, it also unlocks credit cards that pay bonus rewards on mobile wallet spend, a category Walmart had walled off entirely.

Walmart Pay is not going away, and neither is Scan & Go at Sam's Club. You just do not have to use them anymore. After eleven years, the most remarkable thing about this launch is how completely ordinary it is.
