The Ceramic Apple Watch Might Be Coming Back

Every year around this time, the Apple rumor mill produces one story that fans want to be true so badly that it spreads faster than its sourcing deserves. This year it is the ceramic Apple Watch.

The claim: Apple will bring back a ceramic case with the Apple Watch Series 12, expected at next month's September event. It would be the first ceramic Watch since the Series 5 Edition in 2019. It is a genuinely appealing idea. It is also, at the moment, one post on X.

Where the rumor actually comes from

On August 19, the leaker and prototype collector known as Kosutami posted a single line: ceramic Apple Watch is back, and we will see it at Series 12. That is the whole thing. No photos, no part numbers, no supply chain corroboration.

It landed on top of an earlier report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who wrote in his August 9 Power On newsletter that a ceramic case option was expected to return either this year or in 2027. Notice the hedge. Gurman gave a two-year window, and Kosutami's post narrows it to this September.

That distinction matters more than the coverage suggested. Two sources agreeing sounds like confirmation, but the second source here is not independent reporting. It is a brief social post that arrived ten days after the first and picked one of the two options Gurman had already laid out. AppleInsider was blunt about it, noting Kosutami's accuracy record is mixed and that this reads like a follow-on to the original rumor rather than fresh information.

So: plausible, not confirmed. Apple has announced nothing, and the Series 12 itself is still unannounced.

Why anyone cares about a case material

If you never owned one, the appeal is hard to convey from a spec sheet. Apple introduced the white ceramic Edition with the Series 2 in 2016, made from compressed zirconia and alumina powder polished with a diamond slurry, and marketed it as four times harder than stainless steel. A gray option followed with the Series 3.

In practice that meant a watch that stayed glossy. Aluminum scuffs, stainless steel picks up hairline scratches along the edges, and titanium dulls. Ceramic mostly does not. It also runs cooler against skin and sidesteps the metal sensitivity some people deal with. Six years after the Series 5 Edition was discontinued, clean ceramic models still command real money on the resale market, which tells you something.

The catch was always price. The ceramic Series 2 launched at $1,249 when the aluminum model started at $369, and a ceramic Series 5 ran around $1,299. If Apple brings it back, expect that gap to return.

The rest of the Series 12 picture is quiet

Worth setting expectations. Gurman has said he does not expect major design changes to the Series 12 or Ultra 4. The Series 11 and Ultra 3 both still run the S10 chip that debuted in the Series 10, so a newer chip would deliver the first real Apple Watch performance jump in years, along with unspecified health and fitness improvements. An earlier rumor about Touch ID on the Series 12 now looks unlikely, since Gurman explicitly ruled out significant design changes.

That context is exactly why ceramic is getting so much attention. In a year where the Watch is otherwise a spec bump, a new case material would be the most visible thing about it, which makes it the most attractive thing to write about and the easiest thing to over-believe.

Our take: file this one under plausible and wait. The September event is a few weeks out, and Apple is the only source that settles it. If you are holding out for ceramic, do not preorder on the strength of a tweet.
