Toshiba Audible Projector

Toshiba has released their TLP-X2000U Projector, supposedly the first one with voice guidance. The wireless 3LCD device audibly assists you with set up and will let you know about system problems such as lamp life, on/off status and cooling fan status. At a weight of only 4.4 lbs., it has close captioning, a multi-screen function, and is Windows Vista compatible. With 3,000 ANSI lumens, XGA (1024x768) resolution, and a 600:1 contrast ratio, talk ain’t cheap. Think $1,739.00 from Toshiba’s online store.

Fujitsu Lifebook

If you’re trying to decide whether to put a or mini notebook on your holiday wish list, you’re in luck. announced two new mini notebooks today, the 8.9 inch Lifebook P1630 and the “I can just about fit it in my pocket” 5.6 inch U820. Both come with super-sharp WSXGA touchscreens and offer full Windows functionality, but the 1.3-pound, itsy-bitsy U820 includes a 1.6GHz Atom processor, integrated GPS, and comes preloaded with Garmin Mobile PC, effectively turning it into a high-end nüvi with the added ability of being able to navigate directly to your Outlook contacts. The U820 comes with a starting price of $1,049.

If you don’t want or need the navigation feature (and have adult-sized fingers), the P1630 includes a 1.20 GHz Core 2 Duo, built-in accelerometer, 64GB SSD option and a piggy-bank-raiding base price of $2,179.

If you’re in Reno and you use AT&T as your broadband Internet provider, you’re now unfortunately the latest victim of this whole capped bandwidth nonsense that seems to be taking hold across the US. It started when Comcast implemented a 250GB per month cap on October 1. Now word has hit that metered billing of between 20-150GB per month is going to be tested in Reno on AT&T’s DSL network. If you are a new customer who’ll be apart of the trial, depending on the speed tier you choose, you’ll get a cap somewhere between 20 and 150 gigabytes per month. If you’re an existing customer, you’ll be chosen to be a part of the trial if your monthly bandwidth happens to exceed 150GB in a month.

The trend is something we are vehemently against, so I figured I’d ask one of the Verizon PR reps that I know on Twitter, Kevin Laverty, if we should expect a similar announcement from Verizon, after another Verizon rep said no. His answer:

That’s an affirmative - Verizon has no plans to cap bandwidth on either its FiOS or High Speed Internet/DSL services.

It doesn’t get much clearer than that. It’ll be a nice bullet-point for Verizon if they can say that FiOS is not only faster, but also is completely uncapped as far as usage goes.

CoffeeCompany Screen

We suspect there are a lot of people who hit up their local Starbucks to take advantage of the free WiFi and sip the same cup for hours. The Holland based CoffeeCompany has come up with an idea to curb the practice. They change the name of their network with such passwords as “HaveYouTriedCoffeeCake?,” “BuyAnotherCupYouCheapskate” and “BuyaLargeLatteGetBrownieForFree.” While the message is comical and subliminal, the guilt factor must be worth the effort.

SNEAKEY

A team from UCSD came up with a way to steal keys without detection. Their SNEAKEY system used teleduplication to take an image of these keys from 195 feet away using imaging equipment, then managed to duplicate them with computer vision algorithms. You can read the details of the studies that were conducted in both laboratory and real settings on their site. The moral of the story is that even though these were the good guys, always keep your keys in your pocket when not needed.

QOS Flash DriveWe told you about the Quantum of Solace Laptop last month, but if that is too extreme for your budget and you want something to remember 007, how about the USB flash drive? The limited edition 8GB Micro Vault Click Drive has a hidden USB connector and includes a virtual expander to store 3 times the data. There is the nifty logo on the side and the device comes pre-loaded with a movie trailer, behind the scenes footage and images. We guess that that there may not have been enough initial interest, as the price has dropped from $49.99 to $29.99.

Dell DealsWe admit it. With the holidays coming on, we almost welcome the fact that things are not great with the economy. It sort of evens out the playing field for those of us that struggle to pay our rent. So we embrace companies who are worried about a slower than normal season and are trying to help themselves by helping us out. Dell’s Deal of the Day is one such example. They are not only offering low prices on their own products, but on other companies’ products as well, although we found the prices of those about equal to those on Amazon.
