Nokia Lumia 900 unboxing gallery

AT&T, Microsoft, and Nokia are all making a big bet on the Lumia 900 Windows Phone, which launched on April 8 for $99 with two-year contract. That's a great deal, being that this is one of the first AT&T LTE devices, and the first major mainstream Nokia Windows Phone device to hit the US. Those who pre-order through Walmart get it at half price ($49 with contract,) and new AT&T customer walk away with the Nokia Lumia 900 for free. We got our Lumia 900 in a bit early, and we're working on getting our final review up. In the meantime, though, we've put together a Lumia 900 unboxing gallery showing off the hardware. This is the weekend that I close out a lot of tabs and polish off some links that have been in my inbox for a couple of weeks. But if you haven't caught these stories yet, that makes them new, right?

Daniel Best has been on fire lately with his posts on Gary Friedrich and the Archie Comics lawsuits. He’s got another good one up now - a look at the behind-the-scenes backstabbery and finger-pointing surrounding the Spider-Man musical.

I like this political cartoon by Monte Wolverton.

Creator/writer/artist Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary) talks about writing, especially sub-plots, and he illustrates his points with comic strips.

Comic Book Jobs: Editor In Chief

It’s rare to find an editorial job at a comic book publisher posted on the internet. Lots of comic book jobs in editorial go to insiders and word spreads out to people in the industry. But there’s an editor-in-chief job at a comic book company that could be looking for a person just like you.

Medikidz is a health-based comic book company that uses comics to “explain medical conditions to young people in a way they can easily understand.” Based in the U.K., Medikidz has distributed 1.5 million comics in 40 countries, so they’re a pretty good-sized company.

As editor-in-chief, you’ll be “responsible for the overall quality and content” of their comics, set editorial policy, make final deciisons on content and manage all editorial staff and budget. You gotta have team management experience, that includes a knowledge of editing.

Gahan Wilson Teaches Cartooning

One of my favorite cartoonists is Charles Addams. From the time I first saw his cartoons, I loved them. And then I saw Gahan Wilson.

He had such a unique style and a bizarre Addams-like sense of humor, but he went off into different areas - childhood, zombies, science fiction. He was a little grosser, a little weirder, and his style of drawing was not slickly mainstream.

He was a breath of fresh air.

Wilson has lived the charmed life of a cartoonist that you don’t hear about much anymore. He had a regular strip, Nuts (a kind of anti-Peanuts) in National Lampoon (the earlier, funny Lampoon), nearly 50 years’ worth of cartoons in The New Yorker and Playboy, wrote novels, had a syndicated newspaper strip called Gahan Wilson’s Sunday Funnies, book collections and a whole lot more.

Anyone who knows me know that I love anything pink. Throw some  rhinestones in, and that's the icing on the cake. That's why it was love at first sight when I noticed the Phosphor Appear watch on the wrist of a stranger at CES. Seriously, a watch that uses Swarovski crystals to display the time? Bleeding Edge TV 448: Phosphor Appear Swarovski Crystal Watch

The Phosphor Appear is a great looking watch, and a cool gadget to boot! We saw this one at CES, and had to get our hands on one as soon as we saw it. The Phosphor Appear is driven by Micro-Magnetic Mechanical Digital (M3D) technology, the Phosphor Appear watch utilizes miniature-sized rotors adorned with Swarovski crystals that revolve to reveal numerical or chronological information. Every minute, an electrical pulse generates an electromagnetic field that changes the position of the crystals on the face of the watch, which in turn, displays the passing time while producing a distinctive sound unique to the Phosphor Appear digital watch line. Windows 8 Metro Testbed on iPad thanks to Splashtop

If you've been patiently awaiting the arrival of Windows 8 tablets while staring at your iPad with evil eyes, listen up. Now you can test apps in, and play with, the Microsoft Metro interface right on your iPad. While that may sound awkwards--dirty, even--it's perfectly easy to do using the Win8 Metro Testbed app from Splashtop. With it, you can swipe to switch between apps, access the Charms menu, and all the other stuff you'll be able to do within the confines of a Windows 8 tablet Metro interface. You can find the app in the iTunes App Store, where it costs $24.99 for a limited time. Afterwards, it'll be bumped up to $49.99, doubling in price. You need a PC running the Windows 8 beta for the app to work. Check out a video demo after the break.

Spotify has a ‘special announcement’ to make on Wednesday

Spotify is set to reveal a special announcement in just five days. The CEO of the music streaming service, Daniel Ek, will be giving a keynote address at Ad Age Digital, and immediately after, Spotify will hit us with the news. We came across the Phosphor Appear watch line at CES. Although the company wasn't exhibiting there, we spotted the watch on someone's wrist and asked them about it immediately. Six million dollar underground garage has aircraft carrier elevator entrance

So you finally bought that dream car of yours and now you’re wondering where to park the thing? We’ll, if you've got a vast amount of disposable income and want to make an impression, here's an idea. Seen on HGTV’s Million Dollar Room, this garage is filled with dozens of motorcycles--but that’s only the surface level. Walk outside, hit a red button, and watch an elevator appear out of the ground to take you into the lower level of the garage. Oh, and did we mention it uses $25 worth of electricity each time it's used? Though the cars below leave much to be desired, the elevator alone makes up for the lack of exotics.
