Snow White and the Box Office Battle

It’s the kind of thing that happens when rights licensing gets out of hand. As we’ve explained, two different Snow White films will make their way to the big screen in 2012. Each flick is peppered with big names and some fresh faces, and each will present an original take on the age-old fairy tale.
But, there’s trouble, because each film wants to be the first one to come to theaters. Relativity Media’s Snow White was scheduled to release on June 29, so Universal’s Snow White and Huntsman moved its production schedule up 6 months to set a new release for June 1.
Relativity retaliated by moving its fairy tale flick up to March 16. And in the rush to get each movie to the box office, someone’s bound to foul up somewhere.

Since both films seem like a bit of a bad idea, it’s all more amusing than disturbing. No matter when they release, the two flicks are vastly different. The Relativity project, headed by Julia Roberts as the evil queen, is supposed to be light, family-friendly fare. The Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White, will be much darker in tone.
It isn’t likely they’ll even attract the same moviegoers… but it does make a strong argument for more original scripts and fewer remakes, something we’ve been screaming for at FilmCrunch for years.
