Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Sigourney Weaver: She’s already taken on ghosts, aliens and Saturday Night Live—so now it’s time for Weaver to tackle her latest challenge: vampires. In Amy Heckerling’s Vamps, Weaver will actually reign as the queen over two young vampires (Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter) who, unfortunately, find love - and potential mortality - while enjoying New York’s nightlife. Shooting may begin next month.

Angela Bassett: The Oscar nominee has been recruited for Green Lantern, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the DC Comics story. Bassett will star alongside leading man Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Tim Robbins and Peter Sarsgaard as government agent Dr. Amanda Waller. Filming is already underway.

Jayma Mays: Shifting from green news to blue scoop now. A list of names have been rounded up for The Smurfs movie. Glee‘s Mays will play a pregnant human character married to Neil Patrick Harris. In the animated world, Hank Azaria (The Simpsons) will voice the evil Gargamel and singer Katy Perry will handle Smurfette. Meanwhile, George Lopez and Alan Cumming will don the white Smurf pants.

Leighton Meester: The Gossip Girl will be paired with House star Hugh Laurie in The Oranges, a story from Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer. The film, which starts shooting in April, follows a man who has an affair with a family friend’s daughter. The relationship will, of course, bring drama into their lives. Catherine Keener will co-star.

Rebecca Hall: The Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress has been cast in Everything Must Go, a film featuring Will Ferrell as man living on his front lawn while selling his possessions. Hall, a newbie in the neighborhood, will find herself bonding with the alcoholic. The Dan Rush film is based on a short story by Raymond Carver.

Liam Hemsworth: Miley Cyrus’ current beau has landed a role in Arabian Nights, an action-adventure film from Chuck Russell (The Scorpion King). The Last Song hunk will play a young commander who teams up with Sinbad and Aladdin to rescue Queen Scheherazade after the king is murdered. Filming will begin later this year.
