Designers, Celebs Flock to Coco Avant Chanel

Audrey Tautou in, of course, ChanelDespite the fact that Karl Lagerfeld didn’t have a show lined up for New York Fashion Week, celebrities and designers alike got their Chanel fix with the New York premiere of the biopic Coco Avant Chanel.

The film’s stars, Audrey Tautou and Alessandro Nivola, joined director Anne Fontaine for a night away from the fashion week craze. Rachel Bilson, Ciara, Estelle, Adriana Lima, Jason Wu, and Candace Bergen were among the other guests in attendance.

Tautou felt a strong connection and conviction with her subject, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel: “I really don’t see any other designer who has had such a destiny as Chanel. A movie [about a different designer] shouldn’t be made.”

The film makes its way across the US in limited theaters next Friday, September 25.

Jennifer Connelly Recycles Clothes

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Rumors,

Green queen Jennifer Connelly sporting Balmain at a premiereA true green woman, Jennifer Connelly still wears shoes she bought when she was fifteen.

The 38-year-old actress hates throwing away clothes as she thinks that it is wasteful, but admits she sometimes keeps items for too long.

“I tend to recycle. I have Doc Martens I’ve had since I was 15 that I still wear. I have to retire them soon because they are falling apart!”

Although Jennifer has become known for her show-stopping red-carpet looks—she wore a green jewel-encrusted Balmain minidress to the premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You earlier this year—she insists that her favorite outfit is comfortable jeans teamed with a T-shirt and boots.

She also finds shopping stressful, admitting her determination to find the perfect piece sometimes ruins trips to stores: “I like nice things, and I’m quite considered in my taste and thorough in my decisions. I have little patience for shopping because I get overwhelmed. There is too much stimulus and choice.”

Jennifer is not the only star who likes to recycle her clothes— doesn’t agree with throwing pieces away just because they are old and prefers to wear clothes from several seasons ago. “I get upset when designers won’t lend me something from three seasons ago because I’m like, ‘That was your better season. This season sucks,’” the “I Kissed a Girl” singer said.

The Secret to Proenza Schouler is Disagreement

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, News, Sales, Women,

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza SchoulerDespite their fabulous creations, you wouldn’t know that designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez butted heads frequently.

In their defense, Hernandez explained, “It’s part of the creative process—the dialogue.”

Their collection that’s to be shown next week at Milk, for instance, gave the pair quite a challenge. “There was a lot; it’s been a tricky collection,” McCollough said. “We’re doing new things. Like color. But color’s really subjective,” Hernandez finished.

Here’s a taste of what goes on between the two:
McCollough: A color you like I might despise.
Hernandez: Everyone sees color differently.
McCollough: If he likes red and I like blue, we wind up doing purple.
Hernandez: We do a lot of gray, because he likes black and I like white.
McCollough: I don’t really like white, actually.
Hernandez: I don’t really like black, either.

Either way, whatever they’re doing seems to be steadily working: “Things are definitely picking up from the low of last year. But stores still aren’t buying as much,” Hernandez said.

Julia Stiles Parodies Ecofriendly Clothing Lines

In light of the green movement and age of celebrities-turned-fashion-designers, The Bourne Ultimatum actress Julia Stiles pokes fun of these matters by showcasing her faux ecofriendly line, complete with a newspaper suit and shants.

Although I admittedly find this video amusing, I find it unfair that Stiles mocks the good intentions of those designers who want to fulfill their vision without bringing harmful effects to the earth.

Lookbook: Christopher Kane for Topshop

Bust Cup DressChristopher Kane’s Topshop line is finally here, and the folks at British retail chain offer us a peek with the collection’s lookbook.

Although the line isn’t due in stores until next month, much buzz has been circulating around the Versace designer’s 39 pieces. By the looks of the photos (seen after the jump), it is obvious as to why the hype has originated.

The collection, ranging from $60 for a scarf to $310 for a dress, unfortunately isn’t the cheapest. With dresses like these, however, I think that I can make quite the exception!

The line is expected to come complete with shoes and bags.

“Little did I think when the idea of Fashion’s Night Out was first dreamed up this past March during the Paris collections that we would have over 700 and counting retailers, designers, and brands joining us on the night of September 10. Of course, I’ve always known the New York fashion industry to rise brilliantly to a challenge, but I am absolutely thrilled, awed, and more than a little proud that it has reacted so brilliantly to this initiative. There is so much planned that we could shop till dawn and still not see and do everything.”
