Karl Lagerfeld Blasts Lack of Gifted Stylists

Karl LagerfeldKarl Lagerfeld has blasted the lack of "gifted stylists" in the fashion industry.

The Chanel designer has collaborated with Carine Roitfeld for The Little Black Jacket tour, a travelling exhibition of images of Chanel's iconic creation worn by personalities from Sarah Jessica Parker to Yoko Ono and Charlotte Casiraghi, and he was thrilled to work with her because of her talent.

"It's very stimulating to work with Carine, because there aren't so many gifted stylists, and nothing is more exhausting than to work with an ungifted stylist. That makes a job very difficult," he told WWD.

The exhibition is based on a book of the same name and Karl admitted he and Carine didn't always agree on who should be included in the exhibition. When asked how he chose who made the cut, Karl said, "That's the story and secret between Carine and me. I cannot say that there were real rules. There are people she preferred and people I preferred, and then we mixed it all. It's a mix of different tastes and different choices. I love the photo of Uma Thurman [resembling Marlene Dietrich], but she is not like this in life. We made Anja Rubik Japanese. She doesn't look like this either and is playing a part. The idea is the portrait of the personality, or the personality playing a part."

Carine Roitfeld’s Daughter Gives Birth

Julia Roitfeld with boyfriend Robert KonjicCarine Roitfeld has become a grandmother.

The former French Vogue editor's daughter Julia Restoin Roitfeld has given birth to a daughter with boyfriend Robert Konjic although the name of the baby has not yet been announced.

"Congratulations to proud Momma@RestoinRJulia! (And thus, the chicest grannie ever: Carine Roitfeld!) Can't wait to meet the beautiful baby! (sic)" Harper's Bazaar's Derek Blasberg wrote on Twitter yesterday.

Next Models publicist Katy Moseley confirmed the news in an official statement, saying, "We are delighted to confirm that Julia and Robert have had a healthy baby girl. Both mother and daughter are doing very well and resting at home."

Julia announced in November that she and model Robert were expecting a baby and recently posed semi-nude for i-D magazine to show off her bump in a shoot styled by her mother. "I loved that my mum dressed me sexy like that. Pregnancy's a moment in a woman's life when it's really important to still feel seductive," Julia said at the time.

Carine Roitfeld Not Competing with Vogue

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Editorials, News,

Carine RoitfeldCarine Roitfeld insists her new magazine will not compete with Vogue.

The former French Vogue editor - who was at the helm of the respected fashion publication for over 10 years - is set to launch CR Fashion Book and promises she is creating "something different" to what is already on the market.

"The name's not a big surprise, but oh well. [It is a] celebration of fashion and creativity. Vogue is a very beautiful magazine, an institution, and I learned so much working there. You can't put yourself into competition with a magazine like Vogue; you have to create something new, something different."

The magazine will be produced in New York and over half of its 50,000 copies will be distributed in Europe - priced around $10 - with the remainder in the US and Asia. The quarterly publication will also have an online presence focusing on art, culture and fashion and not otherwise present in the print version.

Carine Roitfeld’s New Magazine to Publish Twice a Year

Carine RoitfeldCarine Roitfeld's new magazine will publish twice a year.

The former French Vogue editor has revealed some new details for the as-yet-untitled publication, revealing how often it will print and that she hopes to have it resemble a book.

"There will be no front of the book section and its emphasis will be fashion with a lot of freedom," she told WWD.

Carine flew to New York yesterday to work on the launch issue, which will be released in September. Speaking about the magazine previously she revealed it will launch with an English edition: "I am putting a dream team together to make a magazine. It's an ambition of mine to make a really iconic magazine that's fresh and exciting. There is no value in it being in French, it needs to be international and in English. It will be something less frequent than a monthly to make it more iconic, more collectable. I want to make something really beautiful, chic, different. I have to find a new way, so I am dreaming about it and working it out."

Karl Lagerfeld: Junk Food Makes Japanese Beautiful

Karl LagerfeldKarl Lagerfeld thinks Japanese people have developed "junk food beauty."

The legendary fashion designer is making his first visit to Japan in eight years and thinks local residents have '"changed for the better," largely thanks to a differing diet which incorporates more fatty foods and calorific treats.

"It's changed a lot but it's changed for the better I think. I noticed that people became bigger than before because now they eat more cake and sweets and things like this that they didn't do in the past. There's a real change in the look of the Japanese people. Normally, before, they were all tiny. It's the kind of beauty you get from junk food."

Karl was speaking at a party for the opening of his photography book and Chanel's Little Black Jacket, where he was joined by Carine Roitfeld, who spoke of her appreciation for the fun of Japanese fashion: "They love fashion in a non-blasé way...they love it but they don't take it too seriously."

Karl Lagerfeld Doesn’t Want an Ugly Child

Karl Lagerfe;dIn unsurprising news: Karl Lagerfeld has announced that he would not like to have an "ugly daughter." The German-born designer does not have any children of his own, but is concerned if he did, he would find it "difficult" if they were not aesthetically pleasing.

"It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter. The care you take in your children gives a balance to your life. I think it accentuates your talent. If I were a woman, I would love to have lots of kids. But for men, I don't believe in it."

Speaking in conversation published in Interview magazine between Karl and former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, she confessed her relationship with Mario Testino has helped her learn English better. "I helped him understand what a woman is, how she closes her legs, how she feels on high heels, how she wants to pull at her T-shirt and skirt. And Mario taught me to speak better English, which I was doing badly at the time. He also gave me confidence. When you have confidence, when you feel loved by people, you can tell them the truth. It's important that I can say the photo isn't beautiful or the photo shoot sucks," she said.

Freja Beha Erichsen for Chanel

After losing her longtime gig as the editor of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld has returned to freelance styling. Even though she's self-employed, she doesn't have to look very far for work when she's best friends with creative directors like Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel's head honcho hired Roitfeld to style the latest campaign for the label, starring -- of course -- Freja Beha Erichsen. While her styling abilities are indutibly fabulous, Lagerfeld's choice to shoot Freja in a photobooth brings down the quality of the photos quite a bit. While it's refreshing to see a change in the look of the campaigns, there's definitely a place for experimental shoots -- just not in glossy magazine pages.

Karl Lagerfeld Kind of Supports Emmanuelle Alt

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, News,

Carine Roitfeld, Karl Lagerfeld, and Emmanuelle alt

Karl Lagerfeld thinks that Emmanuelle Alt will blossom in her new role at French Vogue.

The Chanel designer says he is a fan of the 41-year-old - who was recently named as the publication's new editor-in-chief - and thinks she has what it takes to be Carine's Roitfeld's replacement.

"Her style is her big shoulders, long legs, tight jeans, sleeves up to the elbow, one hip out. I personally like her. She's a handsome French woman. She has a style, but is it enough to make a whole magazine? As editor-in-chief, she may blossom."
