Comic Book Jobs: Marvel Studios Interns

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Movies, Marvel Comics,

Deadpool Team UpMarvel Studios, the movie-and-TV division of the vast Marvel Comics empire, is on the prowl for a new season’s worth of interns.

These are part-time, unpaid positions, 20-30 hours per week and involve things like script coverage, internet and comic book research, “typical office duties,” and quick errands (I’m guessing coffee, dry cleaning and picking up comics at the LCS on Wednesdays).

But since this is part of Marvel, you’ll be reading early scripts for Marvel’s upcoming movies and shows, reading comic books and surfing the interwebs. How bad can any of that be?

Marvel Studios is responsible for for the Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four movies, as well as the upcoming Avengers and Thor so there's really no cooler place to want to work right now. Departments looking for interns include: Film Development, Marketing, Legal, Animation and Interactive.

Comic Book Jobs: Marvel, Viz, Tokyopop and Time Warner Interns

Batman & RobinIf you want to break into comics via by following the traditional corporate path instead of freelancing, you might try your luck at being an intern.

There’s usually no money involved, you can get some college credit and you’ll be doing important comic book work like getting coffee for the office or picking up someone’s dry cleaning.

But you’ll get to see how a comic book company works from inside its cubicles and that will either thrill you or horrify you. Companies often hire from their old intern pool when staff jobs become available so this is also a way in, should you do a good job, impress the heck out of the right people, and network like all those books tell you.

Viz Media, the San Franciso-based manga and anime company has a 2010 Fall Internship Program bursting with part-time opportunity in a number of departments: Animation Production, Design, Editorial, Information Technology, Licensing, Magazines, PR & Marketing, and Sales & Retail Development.

Manhattan Beach VolleyballMarvel Studios, the entertainment (think TV, movie, online) division of Marvel Comics which is itself a division of the vast Disney empire, is hiring yet again. They’re looking for a Digital Distribution Manager which sounds very now. I smell an iPad in your future if you get this job.

As DDM, you’ll be responsible for managing “numerous aspects of Marvel Entertainment’s digital distribution and will report directly to the Vice President, Games & Digital Distribution.”

Comic Book Jobs: Who’s Hiring? Marvel and Disney

Pirates Of The Caribbean ComicMarvel Studios out here on the West Coast must be the happening spot for new hires. This is the second job listing in a week or so, and I originally missed this one because it’s listed through Marvel Comics’ parent company, Disney.

Marvel Studios is looking for a VP in Communication and Distribution in Animation in Manhattan Beach, CA.

You’ll report to the Executive VP, Head of TV, so big props to you, Mr. Powerful. You’ll be working on the “development of objectives and strategic priorities for Marvel Animation and its individual programs in each market around the world.”

This sounds like it’s definitely a suit-and-tie, travel, Bluetooth and buzzword kind of job, so you’ll need not only the experience but the slanguage to back it up. You might even get a nice iPad out of the deal. And if any of you do get the job, let’s talk, because I need a new executive friend in animation.

At the other end of the world, though still part of the vast Disney empire, is Disney Worldwide Publishing which is looking for a “Global Editor.”

Comic Book Jobs: Who’s Hiring? Marvel Comics!

Marvel Comics 1With DC’s rumored-to-be impending move to the West Coast, they certainly aren’t in a hiring phase (they’ll be in a shedding phase). But the sole remaining big-time comic book company in New York still looks for people to join the Marvel Employment Universe.

First up, mighty Marvel is looking for a Royalty Analyst for their Finance and Licensing Department in New York. It’s a data-entry gig where you get to “collect and analyze detailed royalty reporting and forecasts.” You’ll also be checking over contracts and how they impact royalty reporting, and working with “worldwide licensee accounting maintenance.”

This is a great entry-level opp for someone just out of college in the past couple of years. And if you “possess a keen willingness to learn, analyze and desire to enhance the licensing business team of Marvel” you could find a new post-college home.

On the opposite coast, Marvel Studios is looking for a System Administrator in their Manhattan Beach offices.

Comic Book Jobs: Who’s Hiring? Marvel!

Super Hero SquadMy favorite superhero cartoons are the DC ones from Warner Bros. where Bruce Timm and friends are at the helm. In fact, if someone just put a show on the air called “Bruce Timm & Friends,” I’d watch it. But the Marvel Comics cartoons have made vast improvements over the years and while I’m outside of the target audience these days, my sons get a kick out of them. Now the Marvel Studios down in Manhattan Beach, California are looking for some help.

In their Animation division, they need a Coordinator in Development and Production. It’s an entry-level deal, and you’ll be working across all of their shows (both regular series and DTV) and pitching in wherever support is needed. In the corporate world, this used to be referred to unofficially as a “floater.”

The job description has a lot of functions – it’s longer than anything you’ll be able to do in a full week – so just be satisfied knowing that you’ll be doing everything someone above you needs done from tracking, monitoring, researching, coordinating and stuff like that. One perk is that you’ll be hiring and managing interns and managing the search for key production and creative positions (which makes you my new best friend).

Quote of the Day: Natalie Portman on Marvel

Natalie Portman

“Any time I get a phone call, it doesn’t come up as a normal number; it’s like a five-digit code. I’m like, ‘What kind of spy organization is this?’ I’ve never seen that before. I’ve had phone calls from people in the government, and they don’t have that. Marvel is some crazy underground world.”

- Actress Natalie Portman on getting contacted by Marvel for her Thor role.
