Danny DeVito Recalls His Poor Childhood

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Features,

Danny DeVitoDanny DeVito was so poor growing up, his family could only afford budget hamburgers.

The Twins actor was brought up in Asbury, New Jersey - between Atlantic City and Manhattan, New York - and told how times were tough for most people. "Out of season, it was like a Bergman film. Rows of parking meters, deserted beaches, busy winter sky. It was very romantic for me. Of course nobody had any money in those days. All we could afford to do was get a [cheap fast food chain] White Castle hamburger. You would literally stop for 50 cents of gas. Everybody chipping it. Topping off the needle, we called it," he reminisced.

Danny is famed for his small stature, and while the fact he is only five feet tall may have felt like a disadvantage when he was a teenager, it made him learn other skills to impress ladies: "I learned how to dance real good. I had to, because [girls didn't want to] slow dance [with me]."

Katy PerryKaty Perry was suspended from school for "humping a tree."

The "Part of Me" singer - who was raised by strict Christian parents and went to a religious school - admits she was disciplined by her teachers after acting out a love scene with a tree.

"When I was in sixth grade I was suspended from school for humping a tree! We were doing a play on Greek mythology and I was Aphrodite. My love interest was absent and so I used the tree as my partner. It was a Christian school!" she said.

Katy has endured a tough six months following the breakdown of her marriage to Russell Brand, but she recently said she thinks the split has given her a "second chance at life." The "Wide Awake" hitmaker - whose 14-month marriage to the comedian ended in December 2011 - says she's had a new lease of life since they parted ways and has no regrets about the past: "I am totally cool, yeah. I'm just excited. I do have a second chance at life and, also, I already have a brilliant life and I sometimes need to just remind myself."

Charlie SheenCharlie Sheen lost his virginity to a prostitute at 15 years old.

The 46-year-old actor stole his dad's credit card to pay for the experience and had the "greatest night" of his life with flame-haired Candy in a Las Vegas hotel room while his father Martin Sheen was sleeping in the room next door, and he also paid for his 15-year-old cousin Joey to have a night of passion with her when he'd finished.

"I told Joey, 'Look, this is my dad's credit card, you're going second.' He was thrilled. He didn't give a s**t. I remember having the greatest night of my life."

But two weeks later, Charlie's father was curious to know what his mystery credit card transaction was for, and when the 15 year-old confessed, his dad said he was only concerned that he hadn't mistaken his night of passion "for love."

"Then two weeks later, my father wanted to know about his Friendly Introductions LLC, Las Vegas, bill on his statement. I explained it. His whole concern was that I didn't mistake that for love. I'm still trying to process that one," he explained.

Kim Kardashian is Proud She Built Her Empire

Kim KardashianKim Kardashian maintains that she built her own success despite being born wealthy.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star said that despite being born affluent, she deserves her success: "Yes I was born rich; it was a classic Californian lineage: lavishness and ostentation, luxury mansions with pools, private clubs, exclusive friendships, and luxury cars. Despite the affluence, at only 31 I've been able to build my own empire in the world of entertainment and, although looks and friendships are important, I want the new generation to understand that if you don't believe in yourself and in your own ideas, you go nowhere."

Kim - who helped her entire family shoot to fame - insists she didn't have her own identity as a youngster. "I've always been very shy, ever since I was a girl: I copied and did everything my sister Kourtney asked me to do, even when at school she would put me in embarrassing situations with boys. She was my idol."

Nicki Minaj Won’t be Poor Again

Nicki MinajNicki Minaj never wants to be poor again. The 29-year-old singer had a tough childhood with an abusive father and grew up without a great deal of material possessions but the "Starships" hitmaker believes her upbringing made her even more determined to be successful.

"In the business you have to be used to really having all the doors closed. So when you have a childhood where you are used to being told 'no' and you're used to not being able to get the best Christmas gifts, you are accustomed to not always getting what you want. But then you become accustomed to working for it. I never want to go back to being poor. Once you have a taste of that you will always be driven. I know what that felt like and I don't want to feel it ever again. So yeah, I mean my childhood was crazy but it got me to the point where I had so much faith in whatever I was doing. I just always feel where there's a will there's a way and I live my entire life that way now."

Lily Collins Didn’t Want Fame

Lily CollinsLily Collins never set out to be famous.

The Mirror, Mirror actress - daughter of singing legend Phil Collins - says she always wanted to be in movies but was doing it because she loved acting not to become a tabloid star: "But the thing is, I was never looking at a strategic way of gaining fame. That's not why I'm doing this."

Being the daughter of famous rocker, Lily's childhood meant she was surrounded by superstars although she can't really remember anything. "I'm told more things than I actually remember, and now I'm running into these certain people who've seen me on billboards, and they come up to me and go: 'Gosh, it's so funny - I remember when you were on tour with your dad and I held you.' Like Elton [John] and people from that era."

And despite Phil and Lily's mother Jill Tavelman splitting when she was young, Lily insists she had a very happy childhood: "I know the truth and I know how it was for me, and I know how much I love my family - and that's all that really matters."
