The return of American Idol‘s Hollywood Week meant the return of boffo ratings for FOX.
8pm
- About 29.9 million saw instruments introduced on American Idol (12.3/29 in 18-49).
- NCIS* (11.7 million, 2.3/6) grew by almost 3 million from last week.
- The Biggest Loser (7.5 million, 3.0/7) lost 500,000 on the viewer scale.
- Just for Laughs (1.4/3) entertained just 4.9 million.
- Reaper* (2 million, 0.8/2) maintained last Tuesday’s numbers.

Tuesday Ratings: ‘House’ Returns to Strong Numbers

American Idol and House delivered a strong one-two punch last night. Their numbers easily earned another victory for FOX.
8pm
- American Idol (28.1 million, 11/27 in 18-49) remained in tune with last week’s figures.
- NCIS* (11.7 million, 2.0/5) was down a smidge from one week ago.
- The Biggest Loser (8.3 million, 3.3/8) lost 600,000 lbs from last Tuesday.
- Just for Laughs (4.9 million, 1.4/4) remained about even.
- Reaper* (1.9 million, 0.8/2) retrieved 300,000 more souls.

Although American Idol was still tops this Tuesday, the numbers for the San Diego auditions weren’t as sunny as last week.

- American Idol (29 million, 11.7/29 in 18-49) was down 4 million from seven days ago.
- NCIS* (12.2 million, 2.1/5) sunk about 3.7 million.
- The Biggest Loser (8.9 million, 3.7/9) gained 1.7 million pounds.
- Just for Laughs (4.8 million, 1.4/4) saw a slight bump.
- About 1.5 million danced with Reaper* (0.6/1) and the devil.

Although it American Idol had its lowest premiere since 2004, the reality phenom mowed down the competition:

- American Idol’s 33.2 million (13.8/32 in 18-49) downright embarrassed the competition.
- NCIS’s 15.9 million (3.0/7) would have looked good on any other evening.
- The Biggest Loser (7.2 million, 3.0/7) lost 3 million inches from last week.
- Just for Laughs (1.2/3) entertained just 4.52 million.
- About 1.6 million welcomed Reaper* (0.6/2) in the new time slot.
9pm
- About 12.5 million (2.4/6 in 18-49) continued on with the Comanche Moon saga.
- Both According to Jim (4.1 million, 1.2/3) and Carpoolers (3.1 million, 0.9/2) were down about 400,000 from last week.
- One Tree Hill (2.7 million, 1.3/3) lost 800,000 from its two-hour debut.
10pm
- Law and Order: SVU (4.6/12 in 18-49) kept 12.1 million arrested.
- Boston Legal (2.1/6) served 7.4 million.

The Biggest Loser and SVU combined forces to whip up strong numbers for NBC. The network dominated with both the viewers and the demos.
8pm
- An NCIS* repeat (12.27 million, 2.4/6 in 18-49) had the largest audience of the hour.
- The Biggest Loser (10.2 million, 4.3/11) was a close winner.
- Both Bones* (2.0/5) and Just for Laughs (1.8/5) drew 6.4 million.
- Coverage of the New Hampshire primaries (1.6/4) informed 5 million.
- The two-hour premiere of One Tree Hill (1.5/4) attracted 3.5 million.
9pm
- House* (10.8 million, 3.6/9 in 18-49) built upon its lead-in.
- The People’s Choice Awards (6 million, 1.6/4) was not the choice for viewers last night.
- According to Jim (1.2/3) entertained 4.5 million. About 3.5 million welcomed back the return of Carpoolers (1.1/3).
10pm
- Law and Order: SVU (5.1/14 in 18-49) killed the competition with its 15.2 million viewers.
- Cashmere Mafia* (1.0/3) topped off the evening with 3.3 million.

- New Year’s Eve Live (FOX, 11pm): Idol alums Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis will perform. In just a few short weeks, we’ll start caring about a new batch of idols.
- Tila Tequila’s New Year’s Eve Masquerade (MTV, 11pm): NYC masked ball will include Kid Rock and Mary J. Blige. Has it already been a year since we were forced to watch Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo kiss?
- NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly (NBC, 11:35pm): Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz will be performing. This may be the first time in a while someone has stayed awake to watch Daly’s show.
