What's On TVBumping and grinding, beautifying and geeking…reality rules tonight. Be sure to tune in and enjoy the last great night of television before the weekend doldrums start.

Dancing With the Stars, 8pm, ABC. This special 90 minute episode will satisfy your celebreality needs. Just be sure to tape Beauty and the Geek.

Grease 2, 8pm, TBS. This isn’t exactly stellar prime time material, but we have a soft spot for this Michelle Pfeiffer early-1980s debut.

That 70s Show, 8:30, FOX. One of the last new episodes ever, as the series will soon sign off.

The O.C., 9pm, FOX. Money and melodrama highlight the adventures of Brandon and Dylan and Kelly…er, of Marissa and Summer and Seth.

My Name is Earl, 9pm, NBC. Everybody’s favorite hillbilly is shining in his new time spot.

Beauty and the Geek, 9pm, the WB. Oh, how we love this show. Love and trouble are already brewing, and it’s only the second episode!

True Life, 10pm, MTV. Tonight, extreme sportists explain why they have a death wish.

The Fog, 11pm, SciFi. The original is worth catching, if just to erase the hideous memories of the remake from your mind.

Kelly ClarksonBiting the hand that fed her, Kelly Clarkson is currently squabbling with the producers of her former stomping ground, American Idol.  It seems the 2002 Winner is not quite ready to have her hits ripped to shreds by aspiring wannabes this season and has refused the rights to her songs.  This, of course, is not settling well with Simon Cowell who has deemed the singer ‘difficult’, stating “It’s the public who bothered to pick up the phone to vote for her. If she refuses to give songs to be used on the show, it’s like saying to every person who voted for you, ‘you know what? Thank you. I’m not interested in you anymore.’”

Some may think she’s being unappreciative of the show that made her her what she is today, but who could blame her for holding out for more money?  Is it her fault that she is the only winner who has had any songs worth singing??  And yes—we are ignoring that Clay Aiken has ever existed…

NOTE TO PRODUCERS:  if you think that Kelly still owes you anything—please keep these four words in mind:  ‘From Justin to Kelly’

What's On TvThe last thing the world needs is another celebrity reality show. But we’ll take it anyway!

  • American Idol, 8pm, FOX. The auditions continue with the usual lack of talent and post-audition breakdowns.
  • Skating With Celebrities, 9pm, FOX. Should we be ashamed to admit we’re looking forward to this? So it’s a rip off of Dancing With the Stars. But still…washed-up celebrities in sequins! Really, it’s a must-see.
  • Beauty And The Geek, 9pm, The WB. In a repeat of the first episode, the beauties and geeks pair up, and the drama starts to brew. If you missed this, be sure to watch it so you’ll be caught up for tomorrow’s new episode.
  • Biggest Loser, 9pm, NBC. An all-new episode of physical motivation and junk food denial.
  • Law and Order, all new, 10pm, NBC.
  • Project Runway, 10 pm and 11pm, Bravo. America’s favorite prima donnas continue to dramatize the runway.

70s Show CancelledFOX has finally pulled the plug on one of its most popular shows. Fans have watched Eric, Donna, Hyde, Jackie, Fez and Kelso grow up over the past 200 episodes. The cancellation comes later than would have been ideal, as the show has declined in quality the last two seasons. And now, with the characters of Eric and Kelso no longer on the show, it seems pointless to go on. Perhaps more shows should follow Seinfeld’s example, and get out while they still have a chance of being remembered fondly. There’s no word yet whether the final episode will feature a reunion of all the original cast members, but we hope so.

What's On TvNights like these are why you need at least five VCRs. Or DVRs. Or Tivo.

  • American Idol Season Premiere, 8pm, FOX: Does any other show have a chance against this perennial powerhouse?
  • Scrubs, 9pm, NBC: Two episodes of this hysterical series air tonight, ensuring twice the fun.
  • The Goonies, 8pm, AMC: Most likely people won’t be giving up hot series television for this flick, but we love the movie so much, we had to mention it.
  • Gilmore Girls, 8pm, The WB: Luke’s ‘big announcement’ is scheduled for tonight. But maybe the episode will be good anyway.
  • Law & Order: SVU, 10pm NBC: The best series of the franchise airs a new episode tonight, with Detectives Stabler and Benson showcasing their usual brilliance.
  • The Shield is new tonight at 10pm, FX.

With House, M.D. on hiatus for a few weeks, juggling tonight’s Prime Cuts is a bit easier.

We recommend:

8pm: Watch Gilmore Girls, tape American Idol.
9pm: Watch Scrubs (normally, you’d need to tape House, M.D.)
10pm: Watch Law & Order: SVU, tape The Shield.

Tune in each day for our recommended Prime Cuts!

Hugh LaurieA close bond between two men is not often seen on television today without some sort of romantic entanglement or macho posturing. Ever since the days of the 1960s Batman series, male friendships have been the object of jokes and accusations of homosexuality. Perhaps this is why you simply don’t see these bonds much on television today.

In fact, I can only think of two shows that ‘dare’ to celebrate this type of relationship to the fullest: NBC’s Scrubs and FOX’s House, M.D. Scrubs takes a delightfully comedic approach to J.D.’s brotherly love for best friend Turk, while House, M.D. showcases the poignancy found in the relationship between Doctors House and Wilson. The usually acerbic House shows his true self only around his best friend, and is able to admit his vulnerability to him. The two give each other advice and support, and maintain a rapport that is both touching and amusing.

Perhaps this could be the start of a new trend in television: the celebration of the power of friendship between men. Isn’t it about time?

Arrested Development Finale

Good news for fans of Arrested Development: FOX recently announced that it will air the final four episodes of the season, which had previously been shelved. Arrested Development has enjoyed a mighty resurrection of late, with Showtime in talks to pick up the series. No doubt fans are rejoicing, though there is some concern over the air dates of the episodes.

FOX aired what felt like a finale on Jan. 2. The episode, titled “SOBs”—short for Save Our Bluths, which is also the name of a fan web site trying to save the show—stuck to “Arrested’s” deeply self-referential guns by mocking both the conventions of ratings-grabbing stunts and its own insular nature (“Maybe we’re not that likable,” Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) tells his family at one point).
But the network has decided to air the season’s final four episodes in one two-hour block Friday, Feb. 10. That night also happens to feature the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on NBC, an event that is likely to dominate the ratings that night.

American IdolIt’s January, which means a TV fan’s heaven of all new episodes and mid-season replacements to check out. It also means the most vicious television battle of the year is about to start. In a fight that makes the Olympics pale in comparison, the major TV networks are desperately tossing new shows, and old returning favorites, into the ring. Who will emerge the victor?

NBC has the advantage of the popular comedy Scrubs returning, along with ratings powerhouses such as My Name is Earl and The Office. ABC’s bringing back the beloved Dancing With the Stars, and has the guarantee of massive Super Bowl ratings. CBS has the advantage of the mega-rated CSI franchise. And Fox, of course, might have the best weapon of all in American Idol.

My predictions? Scrubs will sink in the ratings due to its unfortunate move to Tuesday nights, in direct competition with critical darling and fan favorite House, M.D. CSI will continue to be CBS’s reigning show. American Idol will rule its time slot, beating all competition except on the overdrawn ‘results shows,’ where many viewers will wait until the last 10 minutes to tune in.

Futurama ReturnHey, it happened to Family Guy; why not to another animated series? A cult hit for the four years it aired, Futurama’s cancellation left viewers frustrated, though repeats are available on the Cartoon Network. Futurama follows the adventures of defrosted pizza delivery guy Philip J. Fry, who must adjust to being thrust 1,000 years into the future among an eclectic bunch of colleagues and friends. The results are always entertaining.

Talks are underway at 20th Century Fox TV, which also produces “Family Guy,” to make a “limited” number of new episodes of the cartoon, which was created by “The Simpsons” guru Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. The discussions haven’t gone so far as to include a place to air any new installments, Variety reports.

Since “Futurama” last aired in August 2003, it has followed the “Family Guy” pattern of earning strong ratings as part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming and racking up revenue in DVD sales (although not to the then-record levels of “Family Guy’s” first DVD sets). Also, like “Family Guy” on its first go-round, it was something of an orphan on FOX, saddled with long gaps between episodes and unfavorable timeslots.
