Garmin nuvi GPS System - Super Simple

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: GPS, Product Reviews

Garmin nüviLooking for a last minute gift for Dad’s day? I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi GPS unit for a friend who is navigationally and electronically challenged. These things are so easy to set up that my friend got the hang of it in less than 10 minutes. We went out to dinner and because the restaurant we wanted to visit had gone belly up (no pun intended,) we asked it to find us another. It took about 4 seconds to find one with similar cuisine in the same area.

The positives? Easy learning curve, touchscreen, low cost for smaller models (less than $150.00) and step by step oral instructions. The negatives? Go your own way and the sometimes annoying female voice will chastise you. And occasionally the unit refuses to stick to your windshield. Good thing it’s portable.

Garmin nüvi 785T With Lane Assist

Posted by Patrick Phelps Categories: GPS, Handhelds, Transportation

Garmin nuvi 785t

It may not have speech recognition like the nüvi 880 GPS, but the new Garmin nüvi 785T does tell you which lane you should be in (and includes a mute button) so you don’t have to take along that annoying third cousin. Garmin’s lane assist technology guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate; realistically displaying road signs and junctions on your route. For hands-free calling, the unit also includes A2DP Bluetooth wireless technology, with a built in microphone and touchscreen keypad.

The 785T also offers real-time traffic info, news, stocks, current events and more via MSN Direct with the first three months provided for free, after which you’ll have to subscribe for about $50/year if you want to continue using the service.

CES 2008 Video: Garmin Nuvi 880 GPS

continues to impress with their latest devices. Our favorite is the Nuvi 880, with speech recognition. Speak your orders into the 880—say Grandma’s address—and you’re off. The 880 can also help you find what you’re looking for, whether your hungry, need to find a movie theater, or any other myriad of things. For example, just tell the 880 you need a Chinese restaurant and the device will offer a huge list of eateries within the area. Choose the one you want and the 880 guides you there.

Our favorite feature is that the 880 also offers real-time traffic info, news, stocks, current events and more via MSN Direct, making it the perfect traveling companion. The service is free the first 3 months, and will then cost $50/year.

Garmin nuvi 660 GPS Gets FCC Approval

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: GPS, Transportation

Nuvi 660Hinging on what must be a successful nuvi 360 launch, Garmin looks to be gearing up for the holiday release of the nuvi 660. The 660 just received FCC approval, which gives Garmin the go-ahead to start pumping these things out. Some of the new features cited for this one include a 4.3-inch display, GTM20 and GTM21 functionality (to help with driving during heavy traffic periods), and a super-cool FM transmitter. If strong enough, imagine the ability to broadcast your directions to another car that is traveling with you to the same destination. While cool, we somehow don’t think that this is the intention. Still, we think we will see this one hit retail sometime this November.
