Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais has been named PETA's Person of the Year.

Animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) - has bestowed its annual honor upon the British comedian for his staunch support of animal welfare on his humorous Twitter account, which is followed by over five million loyal fans.

"Ricky Gervais makes sure that animals have their say, tweet, growl or roar on Twitter. He finds humor in most things, but cruelty to animals isn't one of them. As he says himself, 'Animals are not here for us to do as we please with. We are not their superiors, we are their equals. We are their family. Be kind to them,'" PETA's managing director Ingrid E. Newkirk said in a statement.

The 52-year-old star is a well-documented animal lover, often sharing funny pictures of furry creatures such as cats and dogs with his followers, and he has also used his considerable social media influence to promote the ethical treatment of animals. In one tongue-in-cheek tweet, the comic wrote, "We should free laboratory animals and only test cosmetics on internet trolls. They'd get the attention they crave and they'd look nicer."

Jared LetoJared Leto led a minute's silence at the MTV EMAs for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The rocker - whose band 30 Seconds To Mars won the award for Best Alternative act - asked for the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam to be quiet for 60 seconds in remembrance of the estimated 10,000 people killed by the devastating storm which swept across the islands on Friday.

"If we can be part of the solution rather than the problem then that's a wonderful thing and there's a terrible tragedy just affected a great number of people, many people have died, many people are displaced and they are in turmoil right now. So as we celebrate in one part of the world its completely legitimate and appropriate to send an acknowledgement their way. We're in a very fortunate situation right now and the tables can be turned very quickly."

When asked if there should be a benefit for those affected, he added, "I'm not in charge of anything, but if I had my way of course. You help if you can. Obviously we are fortunate to be here and not in some incredible giant storm that's gonna rip our houses and lives away from us. It's nice when people do that, it's solidarity."

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift tries to help her fans tackle bullying.

The 23-year-old star - who was singled out and picked on at school in Pennsylvania - gives her biggest fans the chance to meet after her Red gigs and uses her platform as an artist to help them discuss inclusion issues they may face.

"After the show we pick fans randomly and they're brought backstage into this amazing tent called Club Red. I go in with about 35 to 40 fans and hear what's going on in their lives - whether someone's picking on them at school or if someone had a party and invited every single girl in the class but them. It happened to me, and that's why as an artist, you should try and help people one-on-one."

Taylor - who is on the Oceania leg of her world tour where she will be performing in New Zealand at the end of the month - previously took to the stage with former X Facto' contestant Cher Lloyd and Ellie Goulding during her US performances and she gushed about her time with them: "Ellie [Goulding] is so talented. I thought she was perfect. Cher Lloyd was amazing. It looked like we'd planned all kinds of moves but we were just moving on the same beats."

Charlie SheenCharlie Sheen donated $10,000 to a teenager for a therapy dog.

The Anger Management star has paid a generous $12,000 towards 29-year-old Chris Guerra's burial costs after hearing through a photographer pal that his family was trying to raise funds for the service, due to be held on Friday.

"A tragic incident like this erases the line between the photographer and the subject. It's an unforgiving moment that begs us all to be human and work as one to prevent this in the future. As parents, we are all not supposed to bury our children. My deepest condolences to the families involved," the 47-year-old actor told TMZ.

The kind-hearted star was shocked by the news that Chris was struck by a car on New Year's Day while crossing a busy road in Los Angeles after trying to capture a shot of Canadian singer Justin's white Ferrari. Justin was not in the vehicle at the time, having lent it to two friends.
