Unboxing Live 032: OLPC XO-1 - One Laptop Per Child

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Features, Laptop, PC, Videocasts,

In this episode of Unboxing Live, we open up the OLPC XO-1. If that doesn’t sound familiar, this is the infamous One Laptop Per Child computer, aimed to help children in third-world countries with learning. The XO-1, previously known as the $100 Laptop or Children’s Machine, is an inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children in developing countries around the world, to provide them with access to knowledge, and opportunities to “explore, experiment and express themselves”. The laptop is developed by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) social welfare organization, and manufactured by the Taiwanese computer company, Quanta Computer.

I love the concept. These guys deserve all the support anyone can throw their way.
Keeping the price down on these is key for a success, I believe.

I heard they are making a revision with dual touch screens. I think they should have these in the US schools too. It would help a lot with the education deficit we have right here in the good old US of A.

Providing laptops for a low price to the unfortunate ones around the world would help improve a lot of peoples’ lives and thier education.  Instead of Windows it’s powered by Linux so it’s definitely going to be easy to use and it won’t use up as much memory or space too.  I heard rumors that the next version of this laptop will be under $100!  If this is true then this laptop will surely be sent to a lot of people around the world.  I think this is a really great project.
