On Gear Live: Xiaomi 17 Review: The Compact Flagship That Forgot to Act Small

Jesse MetcalfeWhat is the deal with young Hollywood? I guess you can make an argument that celebs like Lindsay and Britney are at least getting help for their troubles. The next rehab candidate is former hottie gardener from Desperate Housewives, Jesse Metcalfe. According to reports, he started treatment at an undisclosed rehab facility on Monday to “deal with alcohol issues.” I guess the weekend tuckered him out—according to E! Online, Metcalfe was seen at four L.A. clubs on Saturday. He was also denied a hotel room at an L.A. hotel on Friday because of his drunken behavior. According to his rep, “He realized he had a problem and was anxious to deal with it immediately.” Of course, the rep also added the obligatory wish that he “hopes that the media will allow him the privacy to deal properly with his treatment.”

Tara ConnerDoesn’t it seem like just yesterday when this whole Miss USA brouhaha overtook the media and started a spat between Donald Trump and Rosie O’Donnell? If you recall (and if you just wiped the whole thing from your memory, I don’t blame you)—Tara Conner won the Miss USA competition and then almost lost the crown because she was a party girl. Trump took pity on her and let her keep the tiara, provided she go to rehab. O’Donnell voiced her overbearing opinion about the situation and a full-blown war of words was on. After a month in rehab, Conner told People magazine, “I suffer from the disease of alcoholism and addiction. And if there’s anything that I want people to know it’s the severity of this disease and what it can do to people.” Come Friday, Tara Conner will pass the crown on to the next winning contestant. Let’s hope the next Miss USA doesn’t have quite so much baggage.

George ForemanThe second season of American Inventor will feature Foreman grill-meister George Foreman. Oh,... what? Right, he’s also well-known for being a heavyweight champion. But I’m betting these days his claim-to-fame is those little grills. In all, four judges will oversee the competing inventions, including former talk show host and entrepreneur Pat Croce, inventor Sara Blakely and British mogul (and executive producer) Peter Jones. Jones also appeared last year on the show. American Inventor also gets a new host—Nick Smith, a television news anchor and reporter. He replaces the former host, Matt Gallant. Each week, the show travels and chooses a finalist from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Orlando and Houston. After that, a two-hour episode will have the six finalists building a prototype and being judged. The contestant pool is then narrowed down to just three. That’s where viewers come in—selecting their favorite invention which will earn the inventor $1 million and the opportunity to market their invention. The show begins June 6 at 9 p.m on ABC.

Prison Break I’ll admit it. I loved Prison Break during the first season, but have steadily lost interest this year. The start of season two, I’d watch the show while doing something else… the last few weeks, I just haven’t watched it at all. I do get second-hand info from my husband and recaps, and it does sound like things are picking up again. But a third season? Honestly, what are they going to do for a third year? You just know it was more exciting when they were locked up, so maybe season three will have them back in the slammer? Creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring said, “It’s going to return to the fundamental conceit, to the roots of what the show was about.” Yep, sounds like they might be back behind bars after all. “They got scattered in the winds—their stories became separate and defused,” Scheuring said. “They will come back together again, (and) their conflicts and interactions will return.” Ratings are still going pretty well, with an average of 9.1 million tuning in each week.

MTV logo Total Request Live, true to its title, has always been a live show. That’s about to change, at least partially. In an effort to save money, MTV has started taping TRL two days a week… but fear not, live shows will still air on Mondays and Wednesdays. No changes will be made to the title and no other changes will be made, including editing. The show still maintains much of the original “spirit” just done a bit differently. It’s now a live-to-tape show (a la David Letterman, Jon Stewart, etc), but it’s lacking the interactive element with online video voting. “We’re still committed to the show and it’s the cornerstone of the afternoon schedule,” said spokeswoman Marnie Black. “TRL is not the same show as it was when Carson Daly hosted it. The show has evolved and will continue to evolve.”

Ricky Gervais You’ll have to excuse me while I sniffle about this news. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant will not continue with a third season of their show Extras. You may recall that they made the same decision about their first show, The Office—they did, however, wrap up The Office by giving fans a special episode. History is repeating itself here, with Gervais and Merchant ending Extras after just two seasons and offering up a special. If you never saw this little gem, it’s well worth catching a re-run on HBO. The show stars Gervais as actor Andy Millman, with Merchant playing his clueless agent. No word on when the special will air, but hopefully it will bring in more big name celebs (past episodes included Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet, Orlando Bloom, and Daniel Radcliffe, to name a few).

David Letterman Today’s Late Show with David Letterman will have something different—an absent host. Letterman came into work for a taping of the show earlier today, but had to leave because of a stomach bug. What to do when your host is sick? In this case, the show looked no further than one of the guests—Adam Sandler. That’s showbiz, folks. The show must go on, even if your fearless leader is throwing up elsewhere. Luckily, he had already taped Wednesday’s show and is being pre-empted on Thursday and Friday for NCAA basketball. Question is, does Sandler deliver in a pinch? I know I’ll be tuning in to find out. OK, you caught me—I go to bed before Letterman comes on, so I’ll DVR it for another day.

Shanna Moakler Former reality sweethearts Shanna Moakler and Travis Barker documented their love on their MTV series Meet the Barkers. Then the beauty queen and the rocker called it quits. Now it looks like they’re heading for a make-up. Moakler told People magazine, “I’m madly in love with my husband.” This comes on the heels of a 32nd birthday bash that Barker had for Moakler in Miami over the weekend. A party guest said, “They were really affectionate with each other all night long. They really looked loving and happy.” They were also seen together holding hands and kissing on the beach. Whether or not the couple will stick it out for the long haul remains to be seen. Barker filed for divorce last August.
