The Herve (Her-vay) Report: REGIS!!!
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Reality, ABC, HBO, Commercials, The Sopranos, Editorial, Spoilers,
The Herve (Her-vay) Report will take a look at the television industry and anything Kimberly Stewart tookis juicy in that all-consuming world of entertainment. And just like its namesake, the underrated and undersized Herve Villechaize, the report will be short and sweet, tackling a couple of topics and hitting you harder than a headbutt from Mr. Villechaize to the, well, we’ll call them the “crazies.”
Your Calendars!
Regis Philbin, the constant professional, will be making his return to HIS show (get out of the way, pretty boy Consuelos), “Live With Regis and Kelly” on April 26th after having triple bypass surgery about a month ago. The 75-year-old Philbin is most definitely a badass for wanting to come back to the daily grind and match wits with co-host, Kelly Ripa. So, give your props to the O.G.
The Men of Miami Will Feel the Heat
Okay, read Wendy Michaels’ post on what I call, “Menudo’s Back (And I Don’t Mean ...Side).” Want to know what I think? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Can’t we just leave it alone? Do we really need to find the next Menudo? What boy band from back in the day will be revisited with a lame reality show? Please don’t let it be “Newer Edition.” Please! Okay, wait, if Bobby Brown could host it and he’s really messed up, and by this I mean “high,” then okay I can go for it - only hilarity can ensue.
Wait, is Brown even NOT incarcerated to do this?
Aw, Shhhhhhh… It’s The Sopranos
Last night’s episode kicked butt! Thank goodness the violence is back!!! Okay, the ubiquitous SPOILER ALERT… seriously turn back before it’s too late. The New York mob is just a straight up mess, especially now that Johnny Sack died of the cancer while doing his bid in the big house. I loved the cameo of Sydney Pollack, but I was half-expecting him to critique Vince Curatola’s way of acting ala Pollack’s Cingular commercial you see in movie theatres. Anyway, who DOESN’T think that Christopher is going to go for Tony’s seat of power? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

The ink is barely dry on the contract that Bill Martin and Mike Schiff (Grounded for Life creators) signed with ABC Television Studios, but work is already going full steam ahead on a new sitcom starring Geico’s cavemen. That’s right, the commercial concept has become so popular in mainstream culture it’s comedic value can no longer be ignored by network TV, a group determined to cash in on Geico’s advertising success. The two-year deal signed with ABC gives Martin and Schiff seven-figures and a third season option. The new sitcom will focus on a group of three Neanderthal Men living in today’s Atlanta, trying to adjust to a Cro-Magnon world. Martin and Schiff are no strangers to such a sitcom setup – they served as executive producers and showrunners for NBC’s 3rd Rock From the Sun in the past.

Simon Cowell Names His Five Idol Faves
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,
No, Simon isn’t picking out his “myFaves” for T Mobile, but he is naming the singers he thinks are the top five in this year’s American Idol cast. The judge everyone loves to hate says this year’s Idols are “not a great cast,” and “not the best bunch of kids we’ve ever had,” but one of them is still going to win – whatever Cowell thinks. He says the race is very close this season, however, and names his top five favorites as Blake, Chris R., Jordin, LaKisha, and Melinda. These singers are often among the top vote-grabbers every week. But is Simon wrong this time? While Cowell has rarely predicted the winner, Bill Tancer from Hitwise has, according to the Boston Globe. Last year he used search engine data from sites like Google to predict the winner, and this year has named Sanjaya as the front runner in the contest – by more than 2 to 1. It’s true the young contestant has garnered more media attention than most, and is searched online more often than any other Idol on this current season or any other, even past American Idol winners.

Reality Show Searches for Next Menudo
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, FOX, American Idol, Cable/Satellite,
Remember Menudo, the Puerto Rican boy band from the 80s? You may or may not recall that Ricky Martin got his start with this group—the band had a revolving roster which replaced members once they got too old, too tall, or their voice changed. The group lasted through the years, changing the name in the late 90s to MDO. Now, Menudo has jumped on the reality series bandwagon with an American Idol-style competition to choose its next members. Auditions are now underway, with the first set of kids heard in Miami. Serving as judges are Johnny Wright, who managed New Kids on the Block, ‘NSync and the Backstreet Boys, as well as Howie Dorough, one of the Backstreet Boys. “We’re going to make it a little different than it was before,” Wright said. “The beat is going to be the beats of the street now — club, hip-hop and rock. It’s not going to be something that’s pigeonholed.” The Road to Menudo will air on MTV Tr3s, MTV’s bilingual Latin-American channel, next month.

This One Time… at Idol Camp…
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
So, they’ve found a great way to extend the American Idol name. Nope, I’m not talking about the fundraiser “Idol Gives Back,” but rather the marketing genius of “Idol Camp.” Can you imagine being the lucky kid who gets to spend 10 days at a camp that grooms Idols in the making? Forget singing around the campfire… this camp promises to bring past American Idol performers to help with training. Campers can expect help from Vonzell Solomon, Jon Peter Lewis, Carmen Rasmusen, Kimberley Locke and Bucky Covington. “This roster of exceptional Idol talent helps to reinforce our commitment to creating a unique American Idol experience while providing children with the ultimate performing arts education,” says Donna Milani Luther, Camp Director. “All of these talented individuals have something special to offer our campers and we’re looking forward to working with them this summer.” Camp begins the first session on July 7 in Northfield, Massachusetts—$2,999 for 10 days of Idol fun.

Sanjaya a Hot Blog Topic
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Internet,
You’ve got to hand it to American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar—what he lacks in talent, he certainly makes up for in media exposure. He’s the talk of entertainment news shows and web sites, and of course, great fodder for blog discussions. Research firm Nielsen BuzzMetrics has seen significant references to the hairstyle chameleon, reporting that from February 18th to April 8th, there has been a 338% increase in blog references. With each passing week, even more chatter about Sanjaya is online—with many speculating how long he can survive in the contest and if Howard Stern is having any impact on voting. No one could have predicted that he would have made it this far, and every week he seems a step closer to getting the boot. But he’s been safe every week, despite others delivering stronger performances. Simon Cowell has even threatened to quit Idol if Sanjaya wins. Who knows, maybe that threat is what’s motivating people to vote for Sanjaya?

America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 8: The Girl Who Impresses Pedro
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, The CW, America’s Next Top Model, Features,
After being crowned The Most Hated Co-Model, Renee sought consolation from her husband. She then tried to make amends (again!) by doing the little things like writing Jael an apology letter. Unfortunately, Dionne was doubtful that Renee could do anything to make herself believable.
Meanwhile, a hairstylist came to the house to finally take care of Brittany’s whining…I mean hair. Although Whitney managed to live with a weave since she was 12 years old, I’m not sure Brittany managed to last 12 days. Thankfully for everyone, the hair issue was - once and for all - squashed.

Wikipedia Locks Contributions After Episode of The Office
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, The Office, Internet,
If you watched last week’s episode of The Office called “The Negotiation,” you likely got a few laughs off of Michael Scott’s use of Wikipedia for his negotiating tactics. Wikipedia has become the go-to source for information, but most people take it with a grain of salt. Not clueless Michael Scott, who seemed to worship the knowledge site and rely heavily on its advice, saying, “Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you are getting the best possible information.” So, with the exposure on The Office, you can bet that Wikipedia saw a jump in traffic—so much so that the site had to put the negotiation topic on lockdown after visitors started to add tactics that Michael Scott had talked about during the episode. “It’s definitely the result of that episode,” Wikipedia spokeswoman Sandra Ordonez said Thursday.

NBC Offers Plenty of Summer Reality Programming
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC,
Sigh. The reality show possibilities have really taken off, huh? Hold on, because NBC is promising to serve up loads of reality this summer with the return of America’s Got Talent, Last Comic Standing and The Biggest Loser, plus Age of Love, a new dating show. To shake things up a bit, the three returning shows will have new hosts. You may have already heard that Jerry Springer will be filling Regis Philbin’s shoes on Talent, beginning on May 29th at 9 p.m. After a two hour debut, the show moves to Tuesday at 8 p.m. Last Comic Standing finally brings in a fresh host to replace Anthony Clark—and although I’d rather see Jay Mohr come back, instead hosting duties go to Bill Bellamy. To which I say “eh, could be worse.” Comic starts its fifth season on June 13th at 9 p.m. The Biggest Loser will now be hosted by soap opera queen Alison Sweeney (taking over for Caroline Rhea). No word yet on when the show will start. And finally, a new dating show called Age of Love debuts on June 18th at 10 p.m. with Mrs. Kelly Ripa (Mark Consuelos) hosting.

Will Summer Season Be Hot, or Just Lukewarm?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Bravo, Cable, FOX, NBC, Hell’s Kitchen, Editorial, Features, Gossip, News, Renewals,
It’s April, and that can only mean one thing: winter seasons are winding down so that new summer shows can blaze their way onto TV screens. But this year’s shows might not have enough spark to create a blaze…or even much warmth. This year’s summer shows from most major networks and cable channels center around new reality plots, as the summer season is always rife with new reality. Looking forward to summer renewals like Hell’s Kitchen, The Simple Life, and Kyle XY? Most summer favorites will be back for another run at big ratings, including Ghost Hunters (Sci-Fi Network), The Closer (TNT), and America’s Got Talent (NBC). But most networks are banking on brand-new shows to grab viewer attention, not old favorites. What’s fresh, new, and exciting about the summer season this year? If intense drama and reality melodrama appeal to you, then you’re all set for some great TV watching. Check out early previews on some of summer’s new, highly hyped, series.
