Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Video,

American Idol’s 10th finale opened with all due pomp and circumstance. Ryan Seacrest wore a tuxedo, but black tie was optional for everyone else. More than 122 million votes, a record number, were counted to determine whether Lauren Alaina or Scotty McCreery would become the next American Idol.

The year’s Top 13 performed “Born This Way” to open the night’s festivities, each dressed in white like angels. If only they sounded like angels. To call the number bad would be too nice. But the show would improve vastly from here...

American Idol 10: Top 2 Perform

American Idol 10 - Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery

American Idol kicked off the first installment of its finale shows with clips of past Idols and its two current contestants. The stage was set for drama, the Nokia Theater was packed with people and we were all ready to count the cowboy hats as the hour-long performance episode kicked off.

Ryan Seacrest called the battle “the boy next door versus the southern belle.” They are Idol’s youngest two contestants to face off in the final round. Both gained early attention from judges and fans, both are absolutely country singers, both want to win badly. Despite reports from TMZ that the finale might have been otherwise, Lauren Alaina was indeed ready to perform on Tuesday. According to the doctor that Idol trotted on stage, Lauren belted too hard in her rehearsal and blew out a vocal cord.

Think it’ll affect the voting? Doesn’t everything?

American Idol 9: The Finale

Wednesday night was Simon Cowell’s last moment with American Idol, and the night belonged to him much more than the two contenders for the ninth Idol crown. and performed ably on Tuesday night, but only the votes would determine which would walk away with the winning title. The show will undoubtedly crash and burn now that Cowell is walking away…but that is talk for another time.

The Top 12 Idols - including Crystal and Lee, of course - danced out on stage to deliver “School’s Out for Summer.” While Orianthi jammed out on the guitar, Casey James suddenly announced a surprise appearance - Alice Cooper. This was an exciting guest star, but honestly, he sounded quite bad. And I’m a fan.

The evening started out with a fairly lackluster vibe…but there was much, much more to come.

American Idol 9: Top 2 Perform

The Top 2 episode of American Idol’s Tuesday performances opened with appropriate pomp and circumstance. It is the final week of , and soon another winner will become a recording artist. Top 2 finalists Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze have been highly popular with judges and fans all season, so Tuesday’s episode seemed a guaranteed success well before it began.

This week also marks the last for favorite Idol judge , who has long made viewers love and hate him.

Crystal Bowersox had more than a little trouble getting to the stage at the top of the episode, dropping her microphone and getting re-set by producers as she awkwardly made her way to the platform. The whole scene was really unnecessary anyway - Lee and Crystal did little more than nod to host before heading to the backstage area.

American Idol 9: Top 3 Results

American Idol’s Top 3 results show began with a montage of clips from the preceding and footage of the contestants visiting their home towns. Only two of them will make it to the star-studded season finale, where one will be crowned the ninth in a long string of American Idols. Along with the title, they will win a coveted recording contract and lasting reality TV fame.

With so much at stake - and Justin Bieber in the house - the show began with a ton of energy. Forty-seven million votes were tallied to bring us the results, which were (as always) tacked onto the end of an hour-long commercial-fest…with a few performances thrown in.

American Idol 8: Top 2 Perform

8 is in its final week, and that means the show is more exciting than ever. A new Idol is about to be crowned, and on Tuesday the two contenders had to square off vocally. Every thing they did will affect the results they’ll receive on Wednesday. This performance night could, in fact, be the most important of their entire lives.

After all, it might just mark the difference between winning…and losing.

Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen: American Idol’s Finale Face Off

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen

Who will win the crown? The question may be the same each May, but somehow the contestants are always vastly different. This year’s final two male finishers aren’t a bit like the David-David combination that became a staple of American Idol 7. So how do Adam Lambert and Kris Allen compare to each other?

Is it even possible to compare two such vastly different personalities? Lambert and Allen, this year’s Top 2, couldn’t be more contrasting.

American Idol 8: Top 3 Results

American Idol 8 Top 3

Ben Stiller, of all people, opened the Top 3 results show of 8. This odd skit was a tribute to the judges’ table and featured some pretty good comedy from Stiller, SNL regular Will Forte and Simpsons cast member Hank Azaria. Jonah Hill, looking rather dapper with a short haircut, also had a few lines.

All of this, of course, was one long and boring promotion for Stiller’s new movie. Guess which movie company is behind that flick? …

Anyway, there would be many more promotions before the episode was over. Soon enough, was standing on stage touting the fact that the Idol desk is going into the Smithsonian. Don’t get excited. This is just another cross-promotion. The name of the Stiller movie contains the word “Smithsonian,” and Freemantle is figuring they can use reality success to translate into more movie tickets for a sequel that probably won’t break box office records.

American Idol: Make Way for the Finals

Top 3 Idols Perform

The will be named next week, but before the finale extravaganza can begin there was one last piece of business to deal with: elimination. For this special night, all the judges and contestants dressed in black and white (or, one or the other).

The Top 3 Idols danced around the stage and judges’ island singing “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.” I didn’t really love the performance, but nerves probably played a big part for the singers. The week’s Ford video followed, Idols crooning “Heaven” inside an MTV Cribs theme. This one was actually pretty cute, which is more than what can be said of weeks past.
