Despite a 15% drop in viewers from last week (was the holiday and/or country music to blame?), American Idol remained the most-watched show on Tuesday night.

8pm

• Approximately 21.5 million went walkin’ after midnight with American Idol (8.0/22 in 18-49).
• NCIS (15.5 million, 3.1/9) hit a season low in viewers.
• The Biggest Loser: Couples (8.8 million, 3.2/9) lost 500,000.
• Dancing with the Stars* (1.7/5) recapped 8.1 million.
• Reaper (1.9 million, 0.8/2) slipped by 300,000.

• House (FOX, 8pm):  “A nursing home worker is alarmed when the home’s cat curls up next to her. It seems the cat only cuddles up to people who are going to die soon.” That’s what felines call “grooming their victims.”
• Castle (ABC, 10pm):  “Castle and Beckett discover a young nanny dead inside a laundry room dryer, and their investigation leads to a dangerous world of play dates.” The pursuit for the perfect Hide-and-Seek spot can get quite nasty.
• For the Love of Ray J (VH1, 10pm):  “A pool date with two contesants turns steamy.” Thanks to Jason Mesnick, I already know how this episode will end.
• CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm):  “A flight attendant’s murder reveals dirty secrets of airline travel.” Note to self: Pack own pillow and blanket for next flight.

Tuesday Ratings: Season High for SVU

Finally a bit of good news for NBC. Even though the network faced another evening against American Idol, it did manage a second-place finish in the demos. Why? Nice returns for both The Biggest Loser and SVU. (The repeats on CBS also helped.)

8pm

• Approximately 25.2 million watched the Top 13 compete on American Idol (9.2/24 in 28-49).
• NCIS* (13.3 million, 2.7/8) lost 400,000.
• The Biggest Loser: Couples (9.3 million, 3.8/10) piled on 300,000.
• Homeland Security USA (5.1 million, 1.4/4) gave up 600,000.
• Reaper (2.2 million, 0.8/2) slid by 200,000.

Last night’s premiere of Reaper never really stood a chance. Although it was originally scheduled for a 9:00 debut, CW pitted the show against both American Idol and The Biggest Loser. (Had NCIS been new, the bleeding could have been worse.)

• Approximately 24.2 million watched the final group perform on American Idol (8.9/23 in 18-49).
• NCIS* (2.6/7) dialed up 13.7 million.
• The Biggest Loser: Couples (3.5/9) averaged 9 million over two hours.
• Homeland Security USA (1.6/4) detained 5.7 million.
• Reaper (2.4 million, 0.9/2) lost 330,000 from its last season finale.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

ER: George Clooney won’t be the only cameo to keep an eye out for in the next few weeks. TV Guide reports that vet Sherry Stringfield (Dr. Susan Lewis) is now scheduled to make a return to County General as well. No details about her visit have been revealed.

Meanwhile, it’s been announced that Gilmore Girls’ Alexis Bledel will be appearing in the April 2nd two-hour finale as Julia Wise, a new intern.

Tuesday Ratings: Simon Baker Squares Off with Simon Cowell

Last night’s two-hour episode of American Idol faced direct competition with CBS’ powerhouse. Although Idol was the night’s top draw, the program saw a drop from last year’s outing. The Mentalist also took a numbers hit, though the blow could have been worse.

• American Idol (25.1 million, 9.5/23 in 18-49) was off 4 million from last season.
• NCIS (18.1 million, 3.7/10) remained even.
• The Biggest Loser: Couples (8.9 million, 3.6/9) trimmed off 400,000.
• Homeland Security USA (1.4/4) rounded up 4.7 million.
• 90210* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) gave up 1.3 million.

For some reason, CBS chose last night - an American Idol night - to test out a primetime edition of their evening news. Needless to say, the experiment bombed.

• American Idol (27 million, 10.1/25 in 18-49) picked up 1.1 million.
• Outside of repeats, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (6.5 million, 1.2/3) had the worst demos of the night.
• Knight Rider (6.1 million, 1.9/5) grew by 1.1 million.
• Lost* (1.7/4) refreshed 5.3 million.
• The New Adventures of Old Christine* (4.9 million, 1.1/3) fell by 2.4 million.
• Privileged* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) did 300,000 less than 13: Fear is Real.

Tuesday Ratings: Biggest Loser Grows Despite Idol

I was always lead to believe that shows airing at the same time as Idol would suffer because of it. Apparently that isn’t the case with The Biggest Loser. Last night, the NBC show actually improved in the face of Simon Cowell.

• American Idol (25.2 million, 9.6/24 in 18-49) picked up 2.8 million in the post-inauguration week.
• NCIS (19 million, 3.9/10) was up 7.3 million over last week’s repeat.
• The Biggest Loser: Couples (11 million, 4.1/10) beefed up by 8%.
• Homeland Security USA (1.6/4) settled for 5.6 million.
• 90210* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) lost 1.3 million.
