Thursday Ratings: Evening Not So Grey for ABC

Things may have looked grim for the characters of Grey’s Anatomy, but the show looked alive and well last night. The program - Thursday’s top performer - had its best demo performance in 3 months and its largest audience since last fall’s premiere. The weeper gave ABC wins in both the viewers and the 18-49ers yesterday.

Thursday Ratings: Criminal Evening for CBS

One week after facing a new Private Practice, Southland was put to another test. A repeat of Criminal Minds not only did better than the now-moved Harper’s Island, it attracted the most viewers in the 10:00 hour.

Thursday Ratings: ABC, CBS Split Sweeps Start

After what seemed like months of repeats, ABC returned last night with (mostly) new episodes. The network took the 10:00 hour away from Southland and won the night’s demos. CBS, though, was first place with the viewers.

Thursday Ratings: Parks Weakens Without Office

Although it’s still hard to say how Southland will do against an ABC original, the series held up remarkably well in its second week. Unfortunately, the same can’t entirely be said for Harper’s or Parks. The CBS mystery lost nearly 2 million in its second week while the comedy suffered a case of the post-Earl blues.

Thursday Ratings: CBS and NBC Tie Post-Premieres

Depending on how you spin the numbers, the evening either belonged to NBC, CBS or both. The premiere of Southland won the 10:00 battle against Harper’s Island in the demos, but lost in the viewers. NBC tied CBS in the demos, but the Eye network won overall with the viewers. (Maybe we’ll just have to recalculate when ABC isn’t in repeats.)

Thursday Ratings: Many Goodbyes for ER

Last night, viewers came out of the woodwork to say goodbye to NBC’s long-running drama. ER‘s series ender attracted the largest audience for a drama finale since Murder She Wrote in 1996. (It also pulled in the best demos since the conclusion of The X-Files in 2002.)

ER's Eriq La Salle8pm

  • (11.2 million, 3.6/11 in 18-49) saw its smallest audience of the season.
  • The retrospective (3.5/10) got 10.6 million warmed up.
  • (2.6/8) turned in 9 million.
  • (5 million, 1.6/5) lost 1.7 million; (4.8 million, 1./4) gave up 1.7 million.
  • (3.8 million, 1.6/5) was up slightly.

Thursday Ratings: Samantha No Better Than Betty

If ABC was hoping to make some improvements to its Thursday night ratings, the network might have to try again. In the Motherhood and Samantha Who? tied Ugly Betty‘s previous demos while averaging a smaller audience. Meanwhile, a rare Thursday appearance of American Idol gave FOX a win in both categories.

Thursday Ratings: Wins for Both CBS, ABC

College sports coverage proved to be both a winner and loser for CBS last night. Although the NCAA tournament didn’t earn the network another double win last night, the court action did score a tie in the demos with ABC. (The Alphabet was the sole winner with the viewers.)

Private Practice's Taye Diggs8pm

  • (10.2 million, 3.0/9 in 18-49) raised 600,000.
  • CBS’ basketball coverage (3.5/10) scored 9.4 million.
  • (7.6 million, 2.1/6) picked up 400,000.
  • (6.4 million, 2.4/8) improved by 2 million; a repeat of (4.6 million, 2.0/6) did better than the Kath finale.
  • (3.3 million. 1.4/4) lost 400,000.

Thursday Ratings: ER Still Fourth Despite Clooney

George Clooney might be able to schedule meetings with high-ranking politicians, but he can’t save a whole network. Even though ER saw its best audience in two years, NBC only tied for third in the demos and placed fourth with the viewers last night. (The winner in both categories was CBS.)

Thursday Ratings: Taylor Swift Not Enough for CBS

Taylor Swift isn’t just a big concert draw, the country music sensation is a ratings hit as well. Swift’s stint on CSI helped give the CBS program a nice boost on Thursday night. Unfortunately, that other musical hit (a.k.a. American Idol) was also around to do its thing.
