FOX Searches for ‘The Next Great American Band’
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Ratings, Rumors,
No one, not even FOX executives, could have predicted the outrageous success of American Idol. As far as reality shows go, Idol is the winner with viewers. Desperate to re-capture the same ratings success with reality, FOX keeps trying new reality ideas. On the Lot, which had a format very similar to Idol and focused on finding America’s next great director, didn’t sizzle over the summer. But the network still has high hopes for the much-touted new fall series, The Next Great American Band. And though the show isn’t even scheduled to premiere until its October 19 two-hour extravaganza, the Internet leaks have long since started. The problem with the leaks is the same problem which plagues the whole of the Internet: what information can be believed, and what can’t?

My Nagging Question About ‘Pushing Daisies’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, ABC,
While I truly love Pushing Daisies, there’s been one issue plaguing me since last week’s premiere episode. So if there is anyone out there who can answer this question, please let me know. Otherwise, just let me use this as an opportunity to vent.
Question:
Young Ned learned that he could revive dead things when his dog died early in the episode….but he didn’t know that a second touch would make things die again until later. Are we to assume he never touched his dog before that discovery? (And I double-checked. He was wearing a different shirt when his mom died, so that must have been another day).
Okay—maybe that really wasn’t a question; it was probably like a gripe. Nevertheless, I’m willing to overlook that one minor detail. The rest of the show was absolutely perfect.
Cavemen Not Extinct Yet
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC, FOX, House, Ratings,
Highly talked about through the summer, ABC’s Cavemen got off to a pretty good start on Tuesday, a night of the week that’s already filled with stiff competition. The premiere scored 9 million viewers, a far cry from the huge numbers of FOX’s House, but enough to keep the show going for a few more episodes. Cavemen earned enough viewers to become the second most-watched show in its time slot, highly impressive for a show that was spawned through a series of popular TV commercials. Critics bashed the pilot episode, which was not shown for the Tuesday premiere, and advertisers weren’t eager to get involved. ABC ended up selling thirty-second spots for a mere $100,000. Nine million viewers say the Geico-inspired Cavemen are entertaining enough for them, giving ABC the right to drum up prices and thumb network noses in the face of criticism and competition.

‘Project Runway’ Premiere Date
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Bravo,
After months of waiting, Bravo has officially announced the premiere date for Project Runway. The 4th season will begin November 14th.
Why they strangely chose a start date so close to the holidays is unfortunately not mentioned on their website. Nevertheless, I’m just grateful it’s finally returning. (Can you believe it’s been over a year since the last season premiered?)
And don’t panic. Despite rumors he might not return, Tim Gunn will be around to critique the new designers (along with Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia).

A Look at Kid Nation’s National Premiere
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Gossip,
After all the controversy and news articles, Kid Nation premiered Wednesday night on CBS. Forty children between the ages of 8 and 15 were put in a New Mexico ghost town for forty days, and thus the news stories began. After rumors of lawsuits and complaints from parents, CBS kept Kid Nation under wraps for the early fall premiere. The network didn’t even send out media copies of the first episode, which featured the first four days’ of life in Kid Nation. But is Kid Nation really reality? Adult host Jonathon Karsh is onscreen a great deal of the time, and the kids obviously got a lot of suggestions from show insiders. Arranged into classes, the kids performed stunts to win privileges and prizes, and made a surprisingly smart decision when faced with having either a TV or seven new outhouses. Despite the young breakout stars of the series, the bottom line still remains: it’s TV, and beyond that it’s reality TV. There’s a whole lot of adult supervision and suggestion going on behind the scenes, no matter what CBS editing would have us believe.

A Simple Ratings Boost for E!
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Ratings, Renewals, Rumors,
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie enjoyed more than simple success with the first season of The Simple Life. The program brought in good numbers for FOX, one of the power players in the network ratings game. Hilton and Richie became more than celebutantes, known for shopping in sunny L.A. – they became bona fide reality stars. For three seasons, they enjoyed funny exploits for FOX. Then, the friendship fallout. Headlines were splashed everywhere, speculation ran heavy, and soon Richie was making her own headlines for rehab stints and startling weight losses. FOX wanted out of this not-so-simple mess when Paris and Nicole publicly stated they wouldn’t work with each other. The show was dropped, and the two famous-for-being-famous former friends might have lived the rest of their days as mere tabloid fodder. Instead, E! decided to pick the show up, formatting the fourth season of The Simple Life, this time subtitled ‘Til Death Do Us Part, so that the two wouldn’t have to actually spend time together on-screen. The simple show opened to record-breaking ratings on E!, though the same amount of viewers for the season would have been considered a huge flop for FOX. E! announced plans to renew the show even before the fourth season was finished airing. Early on, execs of the cable station said the girls would not get through the fifth season without sharing camera time. Conveniently, they didn’t have to worry about how they were going to pull it off – the girls reconciled, and now the dazzling ditzy duo will be featured together again for their fifth Simple season: The Simple Life Goes to Camp.
