Say Goodbye to MTV’s Total Request Live
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Cable, MTV, Cancellations, News,
After 10 years on air, an MTV program supposedly dedicated to videos will be going on an indefinite break.
Today, Dave Sirulnick, the executive producer for TRL, announced the long-running series will be coming to a close. The show, which debuted in 1998 with host Carson Daly, will get a two-hour sendoff on a Saturday sometime in November.
In the past decade, the daily countdown show has welcomed a countless list of stars and accommodated hordes of screaming girls. Unfortunately, interest in the program starting waning around the time Daly moved on to late-night pastures. Last year, the network decided to air only 4 installments a week (down from 5) after seeing a decrease in viewers.
According to Sirulnick, Total Request Live’s departure may not necessarily be a permanent one. It was simply agreed that the show was in need of a “break.” Maybe MTV will eventually revisit the format once they start caring about videos again?

Christina Aguilera’s Goth Look Failed to Mask Bad Performance
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, MTV, Editorial, Gossip, Video,

To begin, I will be outright honest and admit that I tuned into MTV’s 2008 Video Music Awards last night in hopes of seeing Britney Spears make a [second] comeback performance, despite the comments from her people saying that she definitely would not appear. So I held out until the end of the show, surprisingly allowing myself to concede to an awards show I was clearly out of touch with (the only video I had seen prior to the night was “Piece of Me”).
With that being said, I was still very much excited by all of the performances throughout the night, save Christina Aguilera‘s sad excuse for one.

Is the Industry Getting Sick of The Hills?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, MTV, Editorial,

A recent poll offered up by PopEater poses a very interesting question…and raises a few more. Saying the site has “just about had it” with the “cheesiness” of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, stars of MTV’s The Hills, the site swears to stop covering the pair - if that’s what the public wants.

Paris Hiilton Seeks British Best Friend
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, MTV, News,
I apologize, World. Paris Hilton is going international.
Although her new reality show, Paris Hilton’s My New BFF, hasn’t yet debuted, the famous hotel heiress has already opted to try again. Hilton, believing her American choice won’t fit in overseas, has decided to do an entire new search in the UK.
Starting this October, Paris will start taping a British version of her fall MTV program. While the concept will remain the same, the title will get a slight adjustment: Paris Hilton’s New Best Friend. On both programs, a group of wannabes fight for the opportunity to become a fixture on the celebutante’s side.
In a statement released today, Hilton tried her best to explain the upcoming mission:
“Everyone knows I love LA, but London, watch out—I’m coming to town and bringing my fast-paced life with me. I’m in the UK all the time, but of course I can’t bring all my friends, so I’ve decided to look for a new BFF across the pond. I need a best friend who is hot, who can keep up with me, and most of all, who is real and won’t be a backstabber. I’m not leaving London until I find that amazing girl or guy who can meet the challenges of being my British bestie!”

Lauren Conrad on Gossip Girl?
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Drama, Prime Time, Reality, MTV, The CW, The Hills, Gossip, Rumors,
Set to appear in an upcoming episode of ABC Family’s Greek, reality star Lauren Conrad has spilled the beans on a guilty pleasure of hers: Gossip Girl.
“I love Gossip Girl. I just love it. It’s so gossipy and superficial. It’s amazing,” Conrad said, obviously never one to try be above such silly things, considering her
life on MTV’s The Hills.
Then again, fans of the “fashion designer” shouldn’t get their hopes up—Conrad took it back: “I probably wouldn’t want to see myself on there because it would ruin it for me. I like watching other people get gossiped about. It makes me feel better.”
How profound you are, Lauren!

Britney Spears and the VMAs

Failed performances or not, we should have known that Britney Spears’ relationship with the VMAs would never be completely over.
While it’s still unclear whether the singer will be hitting the MTV stage again anytime soon, Spears has offered her improved self to several of the event’s promos.
Still not sure who Russell Brand is? Well, you probably aren’t the only one. In the following clip, the comedian tries to teach the pop star his name.
Will Britney win either of the two categories (Best Female Video, Best Pop Video) she’s nominated for? Find out when the 2008 Video Music Awards air on September 7.

Russell Brand to Host MTV’s Video Music Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Late Night, Music, Prime Time, MTV, NBC, News, Video,
If you couldn’t stomach the thought of seeing Jason Segel’s privates, you probably missed one of Forgetting Sarah Marshall‘s great cast additions. Fortunately for you, that scene stealer will soon be storming American television.
Although he is barely known on this side of the water, British comedian Russell Brand (Marshall‘s Aldous Snow) has been chosen by the MTV to host the Video Music Awards this September. Brand, who has a bit of a reputation of being a bad boy, was apparently chosen after execs saw him performing his stand-up routine in LA.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time Brand has been associated with the network. Russell acknowledges that he was fired from his job as a VJ in London when he came to work dressed as Osama Bin Laden…on Sept. 12, 2001.
So what can viewers expect from the wild-haired comic? If his recent appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien show was any indication, it is going to be the funniest broadcast yet. (You can see that clip after the jump.)

If you didn’t see this one coming from a mile away, you aren’t paying attention to popular culture.
E! News reports that Ashley Dupré, the prostitute who ended Eliot Spitzer’s career as New York governor, is developing her own cable reality series.
Dupré, who is 23, is reportedly working with Los Angeles-based Handprint Entertainment on some sort of unscripted reality show, possibly with a dating format a’ la A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.

Osbournes to Return to TV
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, FOX, Rumors,

Rowdy and raucous, The Osbournes made a big splash on cable TV just six short years ago. When their reality show first filled screens in 2002, they quickly became the first family of rock n roll. If you think Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack left the small screen too quickly, FOX has something in store for you.
The network has given the green light to six episodes of a new variety-style show featuring the famous family. FOX has likened the project to - get this - The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The new Osbourne show, as yet unnamed, will give viewers an hour’s worth of entertainment in the form of comedic skits, musical numbers, audience participation and special guest stars.

Britney Spears to Return to the VMAs?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Reality, MTV, Gossip,

Unless you were under self-imposed media exile last year, you saw the avalanche of coverage following the Britney Spears appearance at the VMAs. Spears poorly performed “Gimme More” to seven million home viewers last year, though many more would witness her antics thanks to the streaming videos which cropped up everywhere. Will MTV really give her the chance to do it again?
President Van Toffler (MTV Networks Music Group) gave a somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment to the Associated Press that “everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?” But don’t take his comment too lightly. In a world where any press is good press, the mere promise of Spears at this year’s VMAs could create a whirlwind of media coverage. MTV likes press.
The Video Music Awards will air live on September 7, with performances being given from sound stages and rooftops. Right now, it isn’t certain whether Brit will actually perform - but it is certain MTV will want her there for the sake of ratings alone.
