Monday Ratings: NBC Actually Improves

Yes, yes - you heard me right: NBC showed signs of life yesterday. But let’s not get too excited now. It’s not like the network won anything. (The Peacock was still in fourth place.) It just didn’t suck as badly as it has been.

Monday Ratings: Suburbia Survives the Evening

Yesterday’s premiere of Surviving Suburbia did well despite NCAA competition. The program had the best numbers for a comedy debut since the opener of Samantha Who? in October 2007. (A Dancing with the Stars lead-in being the common denominator.)

Monday Ratings: FOX and ABC Divide the Night

Despite all the 10’s issued on Dancing with the Stars last night, ABC narrowly lost the demos to FOX yesterday. Hot ballroom action did stir up the evening’s biggest audience though.

Casting Corner: The Closer, Lie to Me,  Burn Notice and More

Jennifer BealsMary McDonnell

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

The Closer: Mary McDonnell has just lined up her next basic cable job. The Battlestar Galactica vet just has been cast as Christina Hatcher, head of the Force Investigation Division. Unfortunately for Brenda, this captain won’t exactly be a member of her fan club. McDonnell is slated to appear in several Season 5 episodes.

Monday Ratings: New Lows for Heroes, Medium

If you thought a repeat of Two and a Half Men might help Heroes’ chances, you were wrong. Last night, the wilting NBC program once again saw its smallest audience to date. That poor performance led into a series low for Medium as well.

Medium's Patricia Arquette8pm

  • (20.2 million, 4.9/13 in 18-49) stumbled by 900,000.
  • * (7.7 million, 2.6/7) sent 5.1 million home.
  • A original (7.4 million, 2.9/8) didn’t do as well as The Big Bang Theory; a HIMYM repeat (2.6/7) turned in 6.9 million.
  • (2.1/6) registered 6.1 million.
  • (2.2 million, 1.0/3) remained steady.

Monday Ratings: Castle Has Strong Second Outing

While it’s doubtful Castle would be able to do this well without DWTS’ support, the series did show promise in its second week. The Nathan Fillion vehicle joined forces with the ballroom hit to give ABC another double win last night.

Monday Ratings: DWTS Has Best Premiere Yet

Jewel and Nancy O’Dell’s loss was Dancing with the Stars’ gain. Despite being in its 8th season, the program saw its largest premiere audience to date. (I think we can safely attribute that to the Melissa Rycroft factor.) The reality show’s return easily gave ABC wins in both the viewers and the demos last night.

This Week on TV (3/9-3/15)

Kings

(You can view TV Envy’s Midseason Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY 3/9)
  • Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 8pm):  Season premiere. “This season, a new feature in the early weeks is a dance-off between the bottom two couples facing elimination.” Steve Wozniak + moon walk = elimination-proof.
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 8pm):  “The guys’ trip to San Francisco takes a detour once they learn that actress Summer Glau (appearing as herself) is on their train.” If you don’t already know who is, you probably shouldn’t be watching this show.
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30pm):  “Ted reunites with his college girlfriend (), prompting Lily and Marshall to reveal how much they loathed the snooty woman.” From what I recall, one can easily bond with Prepon over a quick smoke break.
  • Castle (ABC, 10pm):  Series premiere. “Well-known mystery writer Richard Castle is questioned by a fiery detective about a serial killer reenacting murders from his books.” Kinda sounds like Basic Instinct, sans a naked Michael Douglas. Or Sharon Stone. Or Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Monday Ratings: Rosy Evening for ABC

Jason Mesnick’s shocking reveal might not have done much for his reputation, but it did plenty for ABC. Yesterday’s Bachelor episode saw its largest audience since 2003 (when Bob Guiney picked Estella Gardinier). The finale - coupled with the post-show special - also led ABC to an easy win last night.

Monday Ratings: Heroes Can’t Rescue NBC

CBS’ repeat-filled lineup gave NBC a chance to pick up some ground yesterday. Unfortunately, the Peacock squandered its opportunity and sunk even further last night. FOX, in the meantime, seized the evening and placed first in both the viewers and the demos.

Heroes' Mohinder8pm

  • (14.6 million, 5.4/14 in 18-49) picked up 600,000.
  • special (11 million, 3.7/9) was off 1.5 million from the last regular episode.
  • * (8.4 million, 2.7/7)* lost 400,000; * (7.6 million, 2.8/7) grew by 300,000.
  • (6.5 million, 2.2/6) had its smallest audience yet.
  • * (1.1 million, 0.4/1) did about the same.
