On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

Rosie O'DonnellRosie O’Donnell has only been on The View three months, and rumors are already swirling that she may be leaving the gabfest. This speculation came after she mentioned that she would like to work on Nip/Tuck in response to an audience member’s question at the commercial break. On Thursday’s show, she set the record straight, saying “Don’t anybody worry where Rosie’s going. She’s right here.” And the ladies of The View should be lucky that she’s sticking around—the show has seen an increase in viewership since Star Jones left and O’Donnell came on board. The show enjoyed its best numbers in its history for November, with viewership up 15 percent over last year.

David Letterman CBS just extended David Letterman’s contract through 2010 for hosting duties of The Late Show with David Letterman. “I’m thrilled to be continuing on at CBS,” Letterman said in a statement.  “At my age, you really don’t want to have to learn a new commute.” A great day for Letterman fans, indeed. This will extend his hosting tour beyond competitor Jay Leno, who is planning to leave The Tonight Show in 2009 (passing duties on to Conan O’Brien).

Letterman has been at the hosting job for some time—and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Late Show in February. He began his tenure at NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman, leaving NBC in 1993 and making the move to CBS and Late Show. “Thirteen years ago, David Letterman put CBS late night on the map, and in the process, became one of the defining icons of our Network,” said CBS honcho Les Moonves. “His presence on our air is an ongoing source of pride, and the creativity and imagination that the Late Show puts forth every night is an ongoing display of the highest quality entertainment. We are truly honored that one of the most revered and talented entertainers of our time will continue to call CBS ‘home.’”

30 Rock OK, I can stop gushing about 30 Rock, NBC’s comedic behind-the-scenes look at a sketch show. NBC has finally given it the full season order. This comes the day after a colossal breakthrough in ratings, having moved to Thursday nights. 30 Rock now is the fourth show in a tight lineup on NBC—My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock provide the return of that “Must See” feeling. And must see they did. 30 Rock, which has not been much of a ratings winner, saw a dramatic 25% increase in viewers (6.6 million viewers overall) when it followed the aforementioned block of shows. Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment, said, “In 30 Rock, Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels, along with stars Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan, have the goods with this excellent comedy. We look forward to future episodes of this bright new show, which is right on-brand for our Thursday-night comedy block.” I know a lot of you out there watch Grey’s Anatomy, but the NBC Thursday night schedule provides a solid two hours of comedy gold.

The Biggest LoserThe Biggest Loser will be back to fight the fat for a fourth season! NBC announced that the show would continue, despite a drop in viewership. The third season has seen a drop of over 2 million from the second season, averaging 7.4 million viewers. NBC exec Kevin Reilly said, “The Biggest Loser is a valuable franchise and proven competitor in a very challenging time period. The producing team has come up with unique ways to keep the series fresh, and we anticipate the next cycle will continue to produce life-changing results for the contestants and jaw-dropping reveals for the viewers.” The slip in viewers is most likely due to its timeslot, where it faces off against Lost and Criminal Minds. The current season will soon reveal the winner of the weight loss competition, who will win $50,000. The third season finale airs December 13th.

Kathy Griffin Huh, who woulda thunk it? Kathy Griffin’s unscripted series, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List has been renewed for a third season. Bravo has ordered six episodes of the third season, set to begin in 2007. Seems the life of a D-lister is pretty engaging stuff, as the show has earned an Emmy nomination. Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President, Programming and Production, Bravo said of the renewal news, “Kathy’s unique style of comedy is brilliantly showcased with this series, and the new season will continue to show her D-List life in hilarious Technicolor, and her daily struggle to move up the celebrity food chain.” Her assistant Jessica, as well as her parents, John and Maggie Griffin, will also make appearances. The question remains—will Griffin ever rise in the ranks out of D-List status? Tune in to find out!

The Girls Next Door E! has really hit the jackpot with The Girls Next Door—the show that chronicles Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends. Oh the fun they have at that Playboy Mansion. But don’t any of them think it’s weird? I mean, the guy has three girlfriends. Why? Because he’s Hef! Hey girls—in case you haven’t noticed, the dude is old. But I guess his riches have clouded their vision. Sigh.

Anyway, E! has ordered a third season of the reality series, with the first episode anticipated for the spring. The show has proven to be a hit, with the second season premiere clocking in as E!s highest-rated original program since 2003. The second season opener gained 1.63 million viewers. I’ll admit it, I’m one of them. I’m not a regular watcher, but if I happen to flip by, I’ll give it a look. I just can’t get over it—3 girls, 1 old guy. What the heck?

The Bachelor: RomeWell, although it’s not yet an official announcement, there is buzz on the Internet that another season of The Bachelor is in the works. It’s 10th season. And no, that’s not a typo. I can’t even believe that some dude has been handing out roses for 10 seasons. Daily Variety is reporting that the 10th installment of the show may air in late spring. The current Bachelor, which takes place in Rome, has not been as big of a draw for viewers as The Bachelor: Paris (which aired in the spring). The drop in ratings is likely a result of scheduling—The Bachelor airs opposite Heroes on NBC. The Rome edition ranks second for its time, and averages 8.06 million viewers each week. The two-hour season finale of The Bachelor: Rome will air on November 27th at 9:00 p.m.

ABC is expected to make an announcement about the renewal next week.

'Til Death Fox has made some big programming decisions this week. First, two new shows, Standoff and ‘Til Death, have gotten an additional order of episodes. Surprising, considering that neither show is much of a ratings winner. Standoff gets six additional episodes, while ‘Til Death has been given the “back-nine” order, meaning it will continue for the rest of the season. There is speculation that the network is running out of new shows to keep on the air, so they are hanging on to these, even if they fail to perform. Standoff, which stars Ron Livingston in the world of hostage negotiators, averages about 9.8 million viewers each Tuesday night; with a drop to just 5 million viewers when the network changed timeslots to 8:00 p.m. ‘Til Death is only grabbing about 6.4 million viewers each week.

The other big news is that Vanished has been cancelled. With poor ratings of just 6.5 million viewers (and 7.45 million when it followed Prison Break), it was clear this one wouldn’t go the distance.

Jason Ritter, The Class While I haven’t been too fond of the freshman comedy, The Class, it has somehow proven itself worthy of an additional order of episodes from CBS. I really wanted to like this show, but I (along with other bloggers and critics) find that there are just too many characters squeezed into a half hour and not enough good writing to keep the comic momentum moving. I think I hung in there for about four episodes before bailing. There’s so much really good TV out there, and I just didn’t have the time for it. I wanted it to get better, but it sort of just trudged along. That’s not to say that there aren’t funny moments, and I’m hoping that the additional episode order will allow the sitcom to make some improvements. Ratings have yet to improve, despite the time switcheroo that made How I Met Your Mother its lead-in. Viewership only averaged about 8.53 million viewers over the first eight episodes. It will be interesting to see if they respond to the criticism and trim some of the characters/storylines.

Friday Night Lights The media has been buzzing for weeks about the fate of NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Friday Night Lights, with most saying that one or both would get the axe. We recently reported that Studio 60 got a full season order, so it seemed that the low rated Friday Night Lights would be taking the fall. Good news, Lights fans—NBC is taking a chance on the football drama by also giving it a full season order. The struggling show has not done particularly well in its Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. slot, so NBC tried it in the Studio 60 time (Monday at 10:00 p.m.) to see if it would do any better. The series has only averaged about 6.7 million viewers. Kevin Reilly, NBC Entertainment president, said of the news, “We’re proud to reward an authentic, poignant series like Friday Night Lights with a full-season order, demonstrating our confidence in its appeal and quality.”

Now NBC will be revamping its schedule to better showcase Friday Night Lights. No official word yet on what the new schedule will look like, but the network will be moving Friday Night Lights out of its current Tuesday night spot (to spare it from the return of American Idol). The new schedule will begin in January.
