Seacrest, Daly Not Competing for New Year’s Eve

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Late Night, Reality, ABC, NBC, American Idol, Gossip, Rumors,
A bit of a slow entertainment news day when a possible rivalry between Carson Daly and Ryan Seacrest is a headline. The rumor that the two are competing for the coveted New Year’s Eve gig that Dick Clark has hosted for oh-so-many years was quickly dismissed by both Daly and Seacrest.
Dick Clark, who made the ‘‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’’ show an institution, suffered a stroke two years ago. In his place, uber-host Ryan Seacrest will be taking on hosting duties for the second year. Daly has his own hosting responsibilities for the night’s festivities on ‘‘New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly’‘, on NBC. The notion that the two would be fighting for Clark’s job seemed to be shot down before the rumor mill could even get warmed up. Daly told the ‘‘Los Angeles Times’‘, “Dick Clark is a huge inspiration for the huge success he’s achieved. But that’s where I stop. The world is changing. I’m young; I have my own thoughts as a producer. I’m not trying to keep his tradition. I’m trying to do my own.”

The Apprentice Returns in January—With a Twist

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Survivor,
The sixth installment of The Apprentice returns in January, with a heavy dose of contestants who are lawyers, plus a Mark Burnett twist. In this season, Burnett will take a page from the book of Survivor and subject each task’s losing team to a less-than-desirable consequence. In seasons’ past, the team who won each task would be treated to a special dinner or shopping spree, while the losers retreated back to the apartment to sulk. This time, the losers do their sulking as they camp in the backyard in tents, with outdoor showers and porta potties. The humanity! Viewers will also see a change in locale—former seasons have used NYC as home base, while the sixth edition calls Los Angeles home. Another fresh spin is that the winning team’s project manager gets to continue as PM until the team loses, and gets to sit in on the boardroom firing for the losing team. It’s nice to see them shake up the format a little, since this franchise has grown more and more stale as the seasons progress. Look for it on NBC on Sunday, January 7th at 9:30 p.m.

Sarah Chalke, who plays hyperactive Dr. Elliot Reid on Scrubs is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Jamie Afifi. Afifi proposed to Chalke last week while on vacation in Hawaii. Chalke, 30, could potentially be facing her last season on Scrubs. There has been a lot of speculation that the series will come to an end after this season, although there has not been any final confirmation of that. Afifi, 33, is an entertainment lawyer. Chalke recently won rave reviews for her role in the Lifetime movie, Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and will next be seen on the big screen in Mama’s Boy, starring Diane Keaton and Jon Heder.
Chalke follows closely on co-star John C. McGinley’s engagement news. McGinley got engaged in August. Who’s next? Zach Braff, we’re lookin’ at you!

30 Rock Gets a Full Season Order

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Grey’s Anatomy, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, Ratings, Renewals,
OK, I can stop gushing about 30 Rock, NBC’s comedic behind-the-scenes look at a sketch show. NBC has finally given it the full season order. This comes the day after a colossal breakthrough in ratings, having moved to Thursday nights. 30 Rock now is the fourth show in a tight lineup on NBC—My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock provide the return of that “Must See” feeling. And must see they did. 30 Rock, which has not been much of a ratings winner, saw a dramatic 25% increase in viewers (6.6 million viewers overall) when it followed the aforementioned block of shows. Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment, said, “In 30 Rock, Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels, along with stars Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan, have the goods with this excellent comedy. We look forward to future episodes of this bright new show, which is right on-brand for our Thursday-night comedy block.” I know a lot of you out there watch Grey’s Anatomy, but the NBC Thursday night schedule provides a solid two hours of comedy gold.

NBC May Webcast SNL Rehearsals

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Late Night, NBC, Saturday Night Live, Internet, Rumors,
The possibility that NBC could broadcast Friday night rehearsals of Saturday Night Live may become a reality. NBC Universal chief digital officer George Kliavkoff spoke at a panel discussion on digital media at the Digital Entertainment Media & Marketing Excellence conference in Los Angeles. “Sometimes it’s a lot more interesting than the show. It’s something we watch on the cameras at 30 Rock,” said Kliavkoff. Currently, the Friday rehearsals are broadcast closed-circuit at NBC headquarters. NBC already has two shows that go behind-the-scenes of sketch comedies—30 Rock and Studio 60 both offer a glimpse at what goes into making a live late-night comedy show. So why not make it a reality with SNL? I think it would be a great inside look at what really goes on, including what gets cut and how things play out in rehearsal.

The Biggest Loser Renewed for Fourth Season

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Ratings, Renewals,
The Biggest Loser will be back to fight the fat for a fourth season! NBC announced that the show would continue, despite a drop in viewership. The third season has seen a drop of over 2 million from the second season, averaging 7.4 million viewers. NBC exec Kevin Reilly said, “The Biggest Loser is a valuable franchise and proven competitor in a very challenging time period. The producing team has come up with unique ways to keep the series fresh, and we anticipate the next cycle will continue to produce life-changing results for the contestants and jaw-dropping reveals for the viewers.” The slip in viewers is most likely due to its timeslot, where it faces off against Lost and Criminal Minds. The current season will soon reveal the winner of the weight loss competition, who will win $50,000. The third season finale airs December 13th.

Tracy Morgan Charged With DWI

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Late Night, Prime Time, NBC, Saturday Night Live, News,
Here I’ve been talking up 30 Rock so much, and what do I find out is the latest entertainment news? 30 Rock star, Tracy Morgan, has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). Ugh. Apparently he was arrested in Manhattan on drunken driving charges at 4:30 AM today. According to police, he was stopped while driving a Cadillac Escalade and reportedly smelled of alcohol. He was later given a breathalyzer test, which he failed. He will be arraigned in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court later for the charges. This isn’t his first arrest either—on December 2, 2005, Morgan was arrested in Hollywood after he was pulled over for speeding. His blood-alcohol level was 0.13 percent (the legal limit is 0.08 percent) and he later faced a sentence of 36 months probation, paid a fine and had to attend an alcohol education program.

Three New Back-to-Back Episodes of Saturday Night Live

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Late Night, NBC, Saturday Night Live,
If you’re wondering when there is going to be another new episode of Saturday Night Live, wonder no more. December is going to deliver the gift of three new episodes with some promising guest hosts. Kicking off the month on December 2nd, Lost star Matthew Fox hosts with Tenacious D as the musical guest. Predictions on whether or not there will be a Lost sketch? On December 9th, Annette Bening will host with musical guest Gwen Stefani, who is promoting her second solo album. I’m looking forward to Bening’s debut appearance—she really has impeccable timing and it will be interesting to see what they throw at her. And, to round out the month, the December 16th episode will feature Justin Timberlake as both host and musical guest. Timberlake appeared in 2003 and did a surprisingly good job—he is really up for just about anything and it’s a lot of fun to watch him give it his all.
I know, I know, SNL can often fail to please… but that hasn’t stopped me from watching it ever since I was a kid waaaay back when. For all the mediocre sketches, there are always bound to be gems. It’s a television institution, for goodness sake.

30 Rock Gets Additional Scripts Ordered

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, Ratings,
Great news, 30 Rock fans! NBC has ordered additional scripts of the show, so here’s hoping we’ll get to see a little more of that Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey magic. The recent move to Thursday nights was not too eventful, ratings-wise, so the fate of this little comedy is still up in the air. Hey, it’s up against Grey’s Anatomy—but I’m telling you, this show is funny. It’s got the goods. What does Grey‘s have anyway? OK, believe it or not, I’m one of the few people that doesn’t watch Grey‘s. And come this Thursday, I will be completely devoted to NBC’s Thursday night block of comedy: My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock. The return of Must-See TV? Well, I know I’ll be there!
