Grease Reality Show Down to Twelve

While I haven’t been a faithful watcher of Grease: You’re the One that I Want, I have tuned in briefly and found myself pleasantly surprised. The show, which is seeking the next Danny and Sandy for the broadway production of the musical, has announced their twelve finalists. Here’s where the viewer’s votes come into play, with each finalist performing live, a la American Idol. The first live show is Sunday, January 28th, on a two hour episode, with seven more live episodes to follow. Plus Olivia Newton-John will be on hand for judging duties. You can’t get any better than Sandy herself.
The twelve finalists are: Allie “Baby Sandy” Schultz, Laura “Small-town Sandy” Osnes, Ashley “Ballerina Sandy” Spencer, Kate “Serious Sandy” Rockwell, Juliana “Rock Chic Sandy” Hansen, Kathleen “Spiritual Sandy” Monteleone, Max “Slacker Danny” Crumm, Kevin “Bellhop Danny” Greene, Derek “Wholesome Danny” Keeling, Chad “Ambitious Danny” Doreck, Austin “Hot Danny” Miller, and Jason “Boy-band Danny” Celaya.

‘Today’ Show Adding A Fourth Hour

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, NBC, News, Ratings,
I literally had to do a double take when I read that the Today show was going to extend to a fourth hour. Huh? Really? I know America loves a morning news program, and no one does it better than Today, but that seems a wee bit excessive. What will hour four look like and why are they doing it? Well, the expansion, which is set to begin in September, takes the top-rated show the extra mile. More time on the air, more money, blah, blah, blah. NBC News president Steve Capus said of the extension, “The success of the Today show has been remarkable throughout its history, and the program has never been in a better position than it is right now. This is a tribute to all the dedicated hard work of Matt [Lauer], Meredith [Vieira], Al [Roker], Ann [Curry] and the entire behind the scenes team. You can’t do this with a program that isn’t a powerhouse—and that is exactly what we have at Today.” No word yet on who will take over anchor duties for the fourth hour. Vieira is under contract as host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, so she bails after 9 a.m. More details about anchor duties will come as the extended show gets closer.

The 2007 Golden Globe Awards

Ladies and Gents – I can’t tell you how excited I am about the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards tonight!! It’s been a whole five months since I’ve done minute-by-minute coverage of an awards show and I’ve been dying to unload. (And yes—I am ignoring the fact that the People’s Choice Awards even exist).
The Academy Awards may get the largest viewing audience, but the Golden Globes telecast is the only one I really love to watch. A cross between the insignificant People’s Choice and the stuffy Oscars, this show mixes credibility with spontaneous fun. Yes—the Miss Golden Globe tradition is beyond lame. And yes—separating Dramas from Musicals/Comedies is something I will never understand. But knowing that I may see a star slam down a drink after bitterly losing is exciting defined.
As for who I think should win? Well, Jennifer Hudson is an absolute given. (Though Rinko Kikuchi from Babel would be a nice surprise). And it would be great to see Forest Whitaker beat out both Leo nominations. But no matter what happens, I’m ready for the ride. So bring it on!

New Pilots Share Similarities With Sex and the City

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, NBC,
Taking a page from the successful Sex and the City is a good place to start. Three new drama pilots all have the potential makings of another chick hit.
ABC will air Cashmere Mafia, described as “the next generation of Sex and the City”—and with good reason, it comes from Sex creator, Darren Star. Cashmere Mafia looks at four friends from college who also happen to be successful female executives. It’s set in New York City, and the gals will work through the stress of juggling careers, family and the choices they must make.
ABC also picked up Women’s Murder Club, based on James Patterson’s mystery books, which has the capacity to be “CSI meets Sex and the City.” In it, four friends (women, naturally) just happen to be a medical examiner, a district attorney, a newspaper reporter, and a homicide detective. The women all work together to solve murder cases.
NBC has ordered a dramedy called Lipstick Jungle. Wouldya believe it? This one is from Sex author Candace Bushnell, based on her follow-up novel. Lipstick Jungle is a peek into the cutthroat world of New York businesswomen.

Grease: You’re the One That I Want is a Ratings Winner

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, American Idol, Desperate Housewives, Ratings,
So, I could say the great ratings for NBC’s American Idol rip-off, Grease: You’re the One That I Want, surprises me. I mean, the show seems to really copy the formula of Idol—but hey, that’s what worked for Idol, so why shouldn’t it work here? And work, it did. The ratings were fantastic, as the show averaged 11.6 million viewers. Mainly viewed by young women and teenage girls, the debut proved that people are interested in just about any type of talent competition that the networks can throw at us. Americans love to root for their favorite, and this show has viewers voting the finalists all the way to the lead roles in a new Broadway production of Grease. The ratings were so stupendous, in fact, that the show earned NBC’s highest non-sports ratings for 18-49 year-olds during that timeslot since January 2004. It was also the highest rated show of the evening for women 18-34 and teenage girls, ages 12-17. Desperate Housewives came in and took a bite of the viewers, but Grease held on to its teenage demographic.

The Apprentice L.A. Recap: Martin “The Philosopher” First To Be Fired

Posted by Monica Edwards Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Editorial,
The Apprentice LA, with it’s new format of awarding the winning team the luxury of making a lush mansion their home, and forcing the losing team to “rough” it out in tents on the green grass in the backyard of said mansion brings an interesting and new competitive twist to the show in its sixth season with Donald Trump at it’s helm. Along with the changes in habitats based on winners and losers, the winning teams’ project manager will continue to be the P.M. for that team until they lose a task—smart move by Mr. Trump, allowing him to weed out the weak from the group by keeping the strongest players in the running as long as they stay up to par.

“Grease” Reality Competition to Feature Newton-John

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, NBC,
Okay, so Grease: You’re the One that I Want doesn’t immediately sound like a hit. But what if they raised the stakes with the promise that Olivia Newton-John, who starred as Sandy in the film Grease, would be on hand to dole out the complements and criticisms. Hmmm, the show now sounds slightly more interesting to me. And she ought to know what flies and doesn’t in this talent competition—the film was the most successful movie musical of all time, with the soundtrack being the most successful musical soundtrack.
Newton-John, who went on to earn multiple Grammy awards and star in other films, will guest star on the first two episodes of the talent show. Like American Idol, Grease: You’re the One that I Want will be looking to America to choose the most talented “Sandy” and “Danny” for the Broadway revival of Grease. The show will begin airing on Sunday, January 7th at 8:00 p.m.

Studio 60’s DVR Viewership

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC, DVR, Ratings,
I found this bit of news particularly interesting because I can relate. Seems Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is getting a large portion of viewership from those who record the show on DVR and watch it later. Count me as one of those viewers. I typically record it because I watch What About Brian during that timeslot. Last season, What About Brian was so great, but this season—eh. Studio 60, on the other hand, has great writing, acting, and storylines going for it. While this show had been a bit shaky in ratings, it seems things are looking up once they count the faithful DVR viewers. Nielsen has deemed Studio 60 the most “time-shifted” series on TV, with more viewers recording and watching later than anything else on the major networks.
For those who watch a show as it airs or a few hours later (known as “live plus same-day”), Studio 60 tracks around 8 million viewers. The “live plus seven” ratings measures those who record and watch within a week. With that category, Studio 60 adds almost 11 percent of its total audience. So, the 8 million bumps up to almost 9 million viewers for the season. Sadly, it takes me weeks to catch up on Studio 60—I wonder how many others out there are like me?

YouTube to Preview Scrubs Musical Number

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Music, NBC, Scrubs, Internet,
As a fan of all things Scrubs, I can barely contain my excitement over the upcoming YouTube preview from the series’ musical episode. On December 29th, a sneak peek of the song “Everything Comes Down to Poo” will be available to view on YouTube. The song is performed by Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Stephanie D’Abruzzo (who guest stars in the musical episode). If you haven’t already, check out the video “Guy Love” on YouTube. This tender sweet song expresses the totally straight, yet sometimes misunderstood, relationship between Braff’s JD and Faison’s Turk.
The upcoming musical episode of Scrubs will air on January 18th.
