30 Rock Gets Additional Scripts Ordered

Great news, 30 Rock fans! NBC has ordered additional scripts of the show, so here’s hoping we’ll get to see a little more of that Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey magic. The recent move to Thursday nights was not too eventful, ratings-wise, so the fate of this little comedy is still up in the air. Hey, it’s up against Grey’s Anatomy—but I’m telling you, this show is funny. It’s got the goods. What does Grey‘s have anyway? OK, believe it or not, I’m one of the few people that doesn’t watch Grey‘s. And come this Thursday, I will be completely devoted to NBC’s Thursday night block of comedy: My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock. The return of Must-See TV? Well, I know I’ll be there!

Michael Richards Makes Racist Remarks

At a perfomance at West Hollywood’s Laugh Factory on Friday, November 17, Michael Richards (Kramer of Seinfeld fame) was the recipient of some heckling. Rather than taking the heckling in stride or returning a zinger to quiet said hecklers, he instead went into a tirade of racist remarks. The outburst resulted from what an audience member called “playful heckling”—he completely lost his temper and made some pretty shocking remarks. TMZ.com has a video of the event, where the N-word as well as other comments were made several times. I’d rather not repeat what was said, as you can find more details about the meltdown all over the Internet. The audience appeared somewhat stunned, not sure whether it was part of the act or not. Several audience members got up to leave. Jerry Seinfeld made a statement about the incident, saying, “I am sick over this. I’m sure Michael is also sick over this horrible, horrible mistake. It is so extremely offensive. I feel terrible for all the people who have been hurt.”
Here’s the thing, folks. When you’re a celebrity, you’re under a microscope and anything that you say or do is subject to so much public scrutiny. This kind of behavior can be a total career-killer, so why not pull in the reigns and control yourself? I’m looking at you too, Mel Gibson.

30 Rock a Ratings Dud on New Night

Oh man, I was hoping that moving 30 Rock to Thursday night would give it a little kick in the ratings pants. Quite the contrary, actually, as 30 Rock did even worse than in its previous timeslot. Last night’s show aired from 9:20 through 10:00 p.m., a result of the “supersize” Thursday night. Despite its lead-in by The Office, 30 Rock didn’t manage to maintain much of that audience. The show only had 5.2 million viewers on board. Previously, 30 Rock aired in the wasteland of Wednesday evening, paired with the now cancelled Twenty Good Years. In that time slot, they were drawing 6.3 million viewers at 8:00 p.m. I know there’s a little somethin’ out there called Grey’s Anatomy that is definitely going to pull viewers from 30 Rock, so we’ll see if the show stays put on Thursdays or gets moved elsewhere. Or, worse yet, gets cancelled (gulp). Come on folks, show it some love!

Fox puts Vanished to Bed; Orders More Standoff and ‘Til Death

Fox has made some big programming decisions this week. First, two new shows, Standoff and ‘Til Death, have gotten an additional order of episodes. Surprising, considering that neither show is much of a ratings winner. Standoff gets six additional episodes, while ‘Til Death has been given the “back-nine” order, meaning it will continue for the rest of the season. There is speculation that the network is running out of new shows to keep on the air, so they are hanging on to these, even if they fail to perform. Standoff, which stars Ron Livingston in the world of hostage negotiators, averages about 9.8 million viewers each Tuesday night; with a drop to just 5 million viewers when the network changed timeslots to 8:00 p.m. ‘Til Death is only grabbing about 6.4 million viewers each week.
The other big news is that Vanished has been cancelled. With poor ratings of just 6.5 million viewers (and 7.45 million when it followed Prison Break), it was clear this one wouldn’t go the distance.

Scrubs Celebration and Spoilers to Boot!

The cast of Scrubs gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate their sixth season—starting on November 30th on NBC. Access Hollywood gave a rundown of the celebration, as well as some details that the cast spilled about the upcoming season. Tidbits include:
- Episode 6 will feature the first all musical endeavor, airing in January 2007.
- Cameos will include Blue Man Group (which we reported yesterday).
- While guest stars will be fewer this season, the cast hopes to land Ricky Gervais and Mackenzie Crook (who played Gareth on the British Office).
- Judy Reyes (Nurse Carla) revealed that she and Turk (Donald Faison) will have some rough times ahead of them, saying, “I don’t want to give too much away, because it’s gonna be airing soon. She’s having the baby and dealing with real life issues that women deal with when they have their children. And [she’s] dealing the emotional turmoil of actually bearing a child and what real women deal with and the sadness of dealing with child birth and the turmoil.”

‘The Class’ Gets Additional Episodes

While I haven’t been too fond of the freshman comedy, The Class, it has somehow proven itself worthy of an additional order of episodes from CBS. I really wanted to like this show, but I (along with other bloggers and critics) find that there are just too many characters squeezed into a half hour and not enough good writing to keep the comic momentum moving. I think I hung in there for about four episodes before bailing. There’s so much really good TV out there, and I just didn’t have the time for it. I wanted it to get better, but it sort of just trudged along. That’s not to say that there aren’t funny moments, and I’m hoping that the additional episode order will allow the sitcom to make some improvements. Ratings have yet to improve, despite the time switcheroo that made How I Met Your Mother its lead-in. Viewership only averaged about 8.53 million viewers over the first eight episodes. It will be interesting to see if they respond to the criticism and trim some of the characters/storylines.

Blue Man Group to Appear on Scrubs

First, let me just say that I can barely contain myself about the return of Scrubs. It’s been way too long of a wait for diehard fans, but we have been filling the void with the excellent re-runs on Comedy Central. This show is just too good, and with rumors that this may be its final season, we need to hang on to every excellent little morsel that this show delivers. Case in point, TV Squad is reporting that Blue Man Group will make a special appearance on the season premiere—which airs November 30th at 9:00 p.m. In the episode, J.D. (Zach Braff) will join the blue percussion dudes on stage at The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino. This does bring to mind the great gag that Arrested Development had with Tobias (David Cross) trying to become a member of the group. Tune in—November 30th is going to be a great night—The Office, My Name is Earl, Scrubs and 30 Rock! Of course, there’s that little show, Grey’s Anatomy, that’s likely to pull a viewer or two away from Scrubs...

‘The Thick of It’ to be Helmed by Arrested Development Folks

Well, it would be a lot more exciting if I could announce that Arrested Development was coming back to TV, but instead we’ll have to settle for the next (potentially) great thing from Arrested‘s creator Mitch Hurwitz. The Thick of It is yet another British adaptation for American TV. You would think that Americans have run out of creative ideas of their own! Anyway, Hurwitz and Richard Day, who wrote and produced Arrested Development, will be working together on the new comedy series for ABC. The American version will take place in the oh-so-funny world of Congress, looking at the inept players and bureaucrats who muck up the works. Day has a great writing pedigree—earning five Emmy nominations for The Larry Sanders Show and Arrested. He’s also written and/or produced for Mad About You, Ellen, Spin City, and Good Morning, Miami.

Ricky Gervais Episode of The Office Coming Soon

The November 30th episode of The Office will be a very special episode. Not ‘very special’ in the typical sense of sitcoms (you know, where someone has an eating disorder or discovers their best friend has a drug problem). No, this is special for fans of the original British version of The Office. The November 30th show will be written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the originators of the series. This is the first episode of the American version that the pair has written. In the episode, Steve Carell’s character (Michael) discovers that one of the new employees has a prison record. For those who were curious if the character of Andy from the Stamford office would continue on the series (played by Ed Helms), fear not—in this episode Andy will seek advice from Jim (John Krasinski) on how to pursue Pam (Jenna Fischer). Knowing Gervais and Merchant’s work on both The Office and Extras, the November 30th episode should be nothing short of genius.

David Duchovny Comes to the Small Screen (Again!)

Ever since David Duchovny left The X-Files, there has been a little empty place in my heart. Fear not, Duchovny fans, for he returns again to the small screen! This time, however, he’ll be working with Showtime on two projects, according to a report from Variety. One series in the works would have Duchovny starring as a writer addicted to sex and drugs—who is trying to raise a child on his own. The pilot does not have a title attached yet. He will also executive produce the series.
But wait—there’s more! He’s also writing a comedy pilot with Bart Freundlich, called Yoga Man, which is said to be similar to the movie Shampoo (with Warren Beatty), only set in a yoga studio. Hmm. Ahh, just when I’d gotten the last of Duchovny out of my system, he’s back again. Welcome back to the small screen, David.
