‘High School Musical’ Dancing Special
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Specials, Cable,
I’m going to take a wild guess and say that most of the die-hard fans of High School Musical 2 have already seen the film a thousand times thanks to their DVR. So every line, lyric and nuance have been dissected at this point.
But for those who just can’t get enough, The Disney Channel will be airing a dance-along version of the movie next month. So if you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out some of those choreographed 8-counts, Zac Efron (along with the other cast members) will be on hand to help provide instruction for several of the musical’s numbers.
Be sure to set your Tivo now for September 8th.

The Return of ‘American Gladiators’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Action, Prime Time, Reality, Sports, Cable, NBC, Renewals,
The sick voyeur in me has always loved seeing Average Joes fight for their lives—which probably explains why Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man still remains a guilty pleasure for me to this day. This fascination also fueled my enthusiasm for the horribly addictive show from the 90’s known as American Gladiators.
The series pitted male and female contestants against the Gladiators who reigned over their arena. The poor souls would do their best to score points by navigating various obstacle courses. They would also try and avoid being taken down along the way. I would compare the show to Iron Chef+Battle of the Network Stars+WWE.
Gladiators, which ended its run in 1996, is now being resurrected by NBC as a mid-season addition. Unfortunately, the show will be subject to an ‘updating’....which could mean just about anything. (Having tried to watch Battle of the Network Reality Stars, I’m hesitant about anything that’s tweaked).
Here’s to hoping that some of my favorite challenges like The Assault and Breakthrough & Conquer will return. If not, I may have to turn to the re-runs currently airing on ESPN Classic.
What were your favorite challenges? How about your favorite Gladiators? Let us know!

Joey Fatone Takes on the Red Carpet
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Games, Music, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Take that, Justin Timberlake! Well, sort of… Joey Fatone, former boy-bander from NSync, has just been tapped to host the red carpet events for TV Guide Network with former Dancing with the Stars Alum, Lisa Rinna. Fatone has made a major comeback since his appearance on Dancing with the Stars, most recently taking on hosting duties for The Singing Bee. While he hasn’t exactly been standing on the unemployment line since he left his boy band days behind—he was seen in the musical Rent, for one thing—his sudden emergence back into the mainstream is a big deal. He starts his red carpet coverage at the Emmys on September 16th and will continue his red carpet reporting through 2008. Of course, this means Rinna and Fatone take over for Joan and Melissa Rivers—and quite honestly, I don’t care who replaces the Rivers, but I’m so glad to see them gone! Fatone remarked, “I am looking forward to making the Red Carpet experience entertaining, spontaneous, and most of all fun—not only for those walking the Red Carpet, but also for the fans watching at home.”

Paris and a Polaroid Party
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Cable, HBO, Entourage, Gossip, Rumors,
Paris Hilton partied at the Polaroid Beach House party earlier this week, a star-studded event. The guest list included a lot of Hollywood hotties, but – of all people – Paris chose to make out with Entourage star Adrian Grenier. He’s the one with the curly hair and somewhat pudgy face. The HBO star must have done something right – but it certainly wasn’t his hairdo that won the famous heiress over. Perhaps he used a line her learned from his cable show? Grenier’s co-star Kevin Connolly previously dated Nicky Hilton, a relationship that ended at Hilton’s insistence. Brandon Davis and Brian Grazer were also at the party, among others.

It would be almost impossible to count the number of TV movies the Disney Channel has premiered. From Halloweentown to Surf Girls, Disney knows how to appeal to the tween and teen set. But even this huge, money-making cable channel couldn’t predict the runaway success of High School Musical, which drew more than 6 million viewers the second time it aired. The soundtrack became a number one album, and the DVD sales went through the roof. Disney did what any cable network would have done – they ordered a sequel.
High School Musical 2 dominated Disney all weekend, airing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And this time, Disney’s original movie set a viewership record. No less than 17.24 million viewers tuned in to see the sequel of the much-loved musical flick. Seventeen million – those numbers are even better than last season’s American Idol, the number one network show. With this amount of watchers, Disney’s movie became the most-watched cable broadcast of all time. The original Musical has already been viewed by more than 200 million in 100 different countries.
On Saturday, I decided to see what all this hype was about. I went to the video store and rented their only remaining copy of High School Musical, then sat down on my couch to find out what all the fuss is about. I was prepared to keep my nose turned up. After all, it’s just another Disney movie, right?

Rock of Love is Aw(ful)esome
Posted by David L. Williams Categories: Music, Cable, Editorial, Features,
As I sit here waiting for the new episode of “Rock of Love” to air, I find myself feeling something I only feel for the rarest of reality shows: sickeningly gleeful anticipation. What is “Rock of Love,” you ask? Take it away VH1.com:
Since 1986 when MTV introduced the world to the blue-eyed lead singer of Poison, women around the world have worshiped Bret Michael’s as a veritable Rock God. Never out of the spotlight, Bret’s career is still rocking with Poison and as a successful solo artist and the women are still lining up in hopes of a lying down with the sexy star. But the demands of life-on-the-road for the ultimate rocker have taken a toll…on his love life.
Twenty lucky ladies will get their chance for an All-Access pass to Bret Michaels’ heart and to share in all his superstar lifestyle. Bret will invite twenty handpicked beautiful women to move into his rock and roll palace in the Hollywood Hills and compete for his heart. They must win over his mind and his body by proving their love for Bret, their passion for rock and their potential to be the perfect “Rock Star Girlfriend.”
The show is a crazy train(wreck) not seen on TV since…well, VH1’s “Flavor of Love.” How, only two episodes in, do I already love the aw(ful)esomeness of this show? Let me count the ways (spoiler alert: there are three ways):

Ellen DeGeneres to Host Variety Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Daytime, Music, Prime Time, Talk Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Back in the day, variety shows were all the rage… now, not so much. Ellen DeGeneres hopes to change that with a new variety show on TBS. And really, who better to do it than Ellen? Her huge appeal makes her a natural choice and I’m sure fans of her stand-up and talk show will be tuning in for a glimpse of what could be a fun little show. Ellen’s Really Big Show, as it will be called, will debut on November 18th on TBS—a two-hour special that will be shot during The Comedy Festival earlier in November. The show will feature both music and comedy… and, of course, Ellen. According to DeGeneres, “I’m very happy to be working with TBS. I usually put two TBS of sugar in my coffee every day, so this is a dream come true for me.” Ha! If you liked that line, expect plenty more during the variety show. Michael Wright, TBS programming chief had nothing but praise for DeGeneres, saying, “It’s especially exciting to see her bring back the variety special format, which for decades provided television with some of its most memorable performances.” No details yet on what performers will grace the “really big show,” but it certainly should be an entertaining couple of hours.

Sure, I had my doubts. There’s a whole lot of junk on TV these days – and some of the junkiest and trashiest of all is in the reality TV genre. I admit, I turned my nose straight up in the air when I read that A&E was going to put The Two Coreys back in the limelight. I mean, come on, The Lost Boys is soooo over. So, late one Monday night when I just happened to catch the pilot episode, I was all ready to start cracking jokes and laughing at these two washed-up former pinup boys.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered The Two Coreys are actually reality TV magic – and a helluva good pick for A&E after all. Honestly, the idea sounds awful. Haim and Feldman, two thirty-somethings who saw their stars rise and fall before the tender age of twenty, a pair of BFF who found life leading them into substance abuse and late night partying before they were even legal. Reunited by reality two decades after they found notoriety with a vampire flick, a veritable Odd Couple for the reality genre. Seriously…this is not an idea that should work. Ever.

Who’s Ready for High School Musical 2?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Seriously, who isn’t ready for High School Musical 2? I’m a little older than the typical screaming pre-teen Zac Efron fan, but I have to admit I find a little twinkle of charm in the first High School Musical—so I’ll likely give the sequel a look this Friday. Hey, what else is there to watch on a Friday night? Summer TV is pitiful and the wait for the fall season is never-ending. So seeing something light and easy like High School Musical 2 should fit the bill nicely. And I owe it all to my niece. My own kids aren’t that interested, but my niece is a full-fledged maniac about the Disney movie. The movie is the follow-up, of course, to the original 2006 story of high school woes set to music. And it took off like wildfire—spinning into a myriad of plays, a tour, album—good god, even an ice show! This time around, the gang is working at a country club (yep, all of them), so you can bet there will be plenty of musical outbursts as they plan a talent show. And with the certainty of success for the latest High School Musical, there are talks of a third installment landing on the big screen.

Out with the old… in with the new. In what can only be considered the lesser of two evils, socialite Kim Kardashian will be taking over the E! reality show throne now that Paris and Nicole’s show got the axe. Often seen with pal Paris, Kardashian—who makes headlines for her booty and sex tape—seems like a natural pick for the uninspired reality programming on E! I mean, have you seen Sunset Tan—ugh. On the upside though, I do on occasion watch The Girls Next Door, if only to figure out how the whole Hugh-Hefner-relationship-with-three-women works. The Kardashian show is not yet titled, but is being billed as a family-oriented program, which will be executive-produced by Ryan Seacrest. The show will take a peek at Kardashian’s life as a boutique owner—who knew—and her relationships with sisters Khloe and Kourtney and half-sisters Kendall and Kylie. Mom Kris and step-dad Bruce Jenner will also be along for the ride. According to Seacrest, “At the heart of the series—despite the cat fights and endless sarcasm—is a family that truly loves and supports one another. The familiar dynamics of this family make them one Hollywood bunch that is sure to entertain.” If you say so. This joins the upcoming reality show on E! featuring Snoop Dogg.
