Each year for the past few decades, a mysterious, black-clad figure has paid homage to the grave of Edgar Allen Poe. The strange visitor carries three roses and a single bottle of cognac, placing these items on the grave of the writer who invented the horror writing genre. This mystery, at least, has been solved – though the ending is perhaps not as melodramatic as it might have been had Poe penned it himself. Nonagenarian Sam Porpora pulled off the stunt himself, all part of a promotional idea for his EAP tours. It all began in the 1960s, when Porpora became historian of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Overgrown and neglected, Westminster needed new life…or perhaps, an old legend. Pictures were published in Life magazine, and fans started to make pilgrimages to the grave site to see the strange figure for themselves.  Though Porpora claims to have begun the mystery visits in the 1970s, some say a figure appeared at the grave two decades before. Is the mystery solved…or will it remain, like so many of Poe’s stories, legendary?
