Sarah Silverman’s Success
Female-led shows on Comedy Central haven’t done so well in the past, but all that might be changing thanks to loud-mouthed, obstinate Sarah Silverman. The comedienne’s show was renewed by the cable channel, solidifying her as a comedy success. Silverman co-writes and co-produces The Sarah Silverman Program, in addition to carrying the lead role for the series. Last week’s season premiere found the show in a cushy spot on Comedy Central, appearing right after the channel’s most popular program: South Park. The debut showed Sarah yelling at the clergy, arguing about abortion, and in general making audiences laugh.

Silverman’s funny antics on the small screen are part of her created character persona, which may not be too different from the real Sarah. In the show, her character’s sister is played by Sarah’s real-life sister Laura, and Sarah’s real dog Duck (named Doug on the show) is often featured. On the romantic front, Silverman is attached to fellow comedian Jimmy Kimmel. The two have been together for five years. Six episodes of The Sarah Silverman Program will air this fall, with ten more to hit the channel this summer.
