Last night, Comedy Central aired Stephen Colbert’s Christmas special for the first time. Did you miss this medley of duets, special guests and conservative comedy? A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All airs again Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and probably many more times before December is through.

This celebration of spirit began with a song and a plea from the funny pundit himself, a new ditty he hopes will become a standard so that many holiday-time royalties will go to him. At one point, the song blatantly begs for money to feed Colbert’s children. Throughout the number, Colbert struts around in fur-covered boots and lots of red. It was, from beginning to end, totally hilarious.

Special guests included country music stars Toby Keith and Willie Nelson (who appeared as the stoned fourth wise man in a Colbert fantasy), R&B celeb John Legend and singer Feist (who played the angel atop the Christmas tree). Even Santa Claus (George Wendt) and Jon Stewart (who sang about Hanukkah) celebrated with Colbert. Elvis Costello and a scary grizzly bear helped anchor the event with Colbert, who used the evening to showcase his own hysterical lyricism and pretty decent vocals in many different duets with his famous holiday guests.

Every moment was a joke and few of them missed the mark, which is pretty much par for the course when it comes to Colbert’s comedy. He knows his audience well and he offers up the laughs they crave without shame - especially during the season of giving. If funny new Christmas ballads and jokes at every turn sound like the perfect holiday fare to you, just tune in to Colbert’s Christmas. Comedy Central is serving it up every day this week.
