America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 9: ‘The Girls Who Crawl’

Description

Ebony’s surprise decision to go home really struck a chord with the other ladies.  Ebony knew she didn’t belong in the competition anymore – but did the other girls deserve to remain?  Ambreal’s second chance came as a mixed blessing; she now had to work twice as hard to prove she really belonged.  And what about Sarah?  She was brought into the mix as this season’s plus-sized competitor.  Should an unexpected weight-loss bar her from getting any further?  Would she need to establish her place on the sizing chart before becoming ?

This week, Bianca whipped out a new strategy to bring someone else down.  Instead of nitpicking on Heather’s flaws, she criticized her good looks.  (I believe this is called the ‘Oh Woe is Me’ Defense.)  Bianca insisted that the other girls, like herself, had to work harder than Heather because they didn’t possess her natural beauty.  They couldn’t just show up to a photo shoot and just ‘sit there’.  Heather, of course, took offense to Bianca’s bitter remarks.  She denied not doing ‘anything extraordinary’ for her photos.  She considered herself to be an artist who was always thinking about her shoots.

The only girl who didn’t question her place in the competition was Chantal.  The naïve competitor openly admitted she didn’t have ‘any doubts’ about herself.  She knew she was born to be a model.  “What the other girls are lacking, I’ve got it all.”  (Those were her words, not mine.)

The ladies later arrived at a dance studio for their lesson of the week.  After changing into full body leotards, they were greeted by their ‘dance instructor’: Tyra.  Their mission today was to learn how to look good in front of a moving camera.  The rules of posing for still photos didn’t always apply in film or television shoots.  Tyra also wanted to underscore the difference between ‘model sexy’ versus ‘hoochie sexy’.

The day was spent teaching the girls invaluable skills they would take with them throughout their lives.  In addition to sex-ifying their usual runway walk, the girls learned how to flirt with a camera and how to do a proper ‘wall slide’.  The most interesting lesson of the day probably had to be the ‘floor crawl’.  What would normally seem to be a very easy motion proved to be quite difficult for some.  Tyra felt that Chantal was ‘moving on a ½ tank of gas’ and that Bianca was self-consciously holding herself back.  Meanwhile, Heather wiped the floor with her crawl; Tyra loved the use of her hands.  Of course, this solidified Bianca’s belief that Heather ‘could do no wrong’.

Back at home, Lisa discovered she had gained…a whole pound.  Her weigh-in then prompted other girls to take turns sizing themselves up.  Apparently wanting to seek reassurance, Bianca announced that she was the heaviest person in the house.  Unfortunately, Sarah – who had been standing there the whole time - played right into Bianca’s game and claimed the fat crown.  (‘You’re not the fattest one Bianca, I am.’)

The next day the girls were taken to a local theater.  Once on stage, they were introduced to video music director Jessy Terrero.  Jessy told the ladies he was looking for models to star in the next Enrique Iglesias video.  Although all eight girls would have a chance to participate, a select few would be featured in the shoot.  After consulting with Iglesias and the record lable, the director told Lisa and Heather they would be given a bit more screen time.  Terrero loved Lisa’s height and vibe; they felt she had the right look for what they wanted.  As for Heather (who would have a slightly smaller role), she had the right gothic feel they were hoping to achieve.

The vampire-themed video for ‘Tired of Being Sorry’ (you can see it here) was set in a underground rave.  As Enrique entered the building, he was greeted by Jenah and Heather.  Although Jenah was far too smiley with her eyes, Heather gave the right amount of fierceness needed for the welcome.  As Enrique worked his way through the club, we got glimpses of Ambreal doing her ‘wall slide’ down a pole (her move was later deemed ‘too hoochie’ by Tyra). We also got a shot of Chantal standing up against a column.  Unfortunately she spent her whole time looking far too ‘modely’ and stiff for someone who was supposed to be ‘tracking’ Enrique’s moves.

Later in the video, Enrique was stopped in a hallway by Lisa.  The long-legged model did an impressive job seducing him with her moves before he was lured away by another woman.  Iglesias was then led into another room where Sarah, Bianca and Saleisha were waiting.  Although Saleisha and Sarah looked devilish and sexy in their corner, Bianca appeared far too pleased with herself on her side of the frame.  She even threw in a few kissy lips for good measure.

As the final group scene was being staged, Heather came close to hitting the floor.  A whole day of not eating (she claims they were too busy) and working in a hot environment was just a bit too much on her system.  But after being looked over by the on-set medics, she quickly recovered.  Nevertheless, the incident forced Bianca to speculate whether Heather could handle being in the modeling industry at all.  She predicted Heather would have a nervous breakdown if she didn’t have someone constantly helping her.

At the next judges’ panel, Lisa was chosen this week’s winner.  If she could deliver the same performance from the video shoot in a photo shoot, they all believed she could easily be America’s Next Top Model.  Ranking in this week’s Bottom Two were Chantal and Sarah.  The judges, already bothered by Sarah’s weight issue, didn’t believe she was comfortable with her own body.  They often sensed her pulling away.  Meanwhile, they felt Chantal was coasting somewhere in the middle of the pack.  Her performance in the video shoot was basically a waste of film.

The lesson of the week?  You can never be fat enough.  LOSER: Sarah.
