Jason FrasorIs there a team with more to prove than the Toronto Blue Jays? Before the season began a week ago, many already wrote the Jays off as the basement dwellers in the American League East. Six games into the season, they own sole possession of first with a 5-1 record after taking two from Texas to begin the road trip and following that up with a sweep of Baltimore, who were supposed to have leapfrogged the Jays in sheer talent. The Jays sent a message to the nation by winning their fifth straight.

Capitals extend franchise-record streak

Alex OvechkinWhat’s worse than chasing a team who is in first place? Chasing them when they were in first before starting an 11-game winning streak. That’s the challenge facing everybody in the Eastern Conference not named the Washington Capitals. The Caps beat the Bruins on Tuesday 4-1, running their winning streak to a franchise-best 11 games, breaking a record set in 1984. They now have a 10-point lead over the second-place New Jersey Devils, and with the way things are going, you may as well hand them the Prince of Wales Trophy now.

Brodeur legacy v2.0

Mike BrodeurStep aside Martin, there’s a new Brodeur in town. Distant relative Mike has made the NHL and is ready for action. Called up as an emergency replacement for injured teammate Pascal Leclaire, Brodeur has filled the backup role exceptionally, shutting out the Rangers on Jan. 14, then allowing just two goals to the Canadiens on Jan. 16. Brodeur’s only other NHL experience was his debut on Dec. 19 against the Minnesota Wild where he stopped 22 of 23 shots. He was credited with the “W” on all three occasions.
