You have the usual suspects atop the standings, whether it’s Sidney Crosby or his Penguins, but where is Tampa Bay right now if not for Steven Stamkos?

Trio of youngsters ready to shine for the Edmonton Oilers

Taylor HallWhen the Edmonton Oilers start the 2010-11 season, they’ll ice a trio of 19-year-olds. First-overall pick Taylor Hall, World Juniors clutch man Jordan Eberle and Swedish phenom Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson are all set to make their NHL debuts with the NHL’s reigning worst-place team. Okay, Hall is technically 18-years-old, but he’ll turn 19 in November, so he gets a pass this time. He’s still the most likely of the trio to break camp with the Oilers anyway.

Edmonton finally finds reason to celebrate

Tyler SeguinTSN, Canada’s all-sports television network aired yesterday’s NHL Draft Lottery. The first 14 picks were ordered for the draft to take place on June 25 and 26, while the remaining 16 selections will be determined by the playoffs. After the climatic moment where the No. 1 picking team was revealed to be the Oilers, the program cut to a shot of Edmontonians celebrating in a bar. Did anybody tell these guys they finished in a convincing last place in all of hockey?

The history of the NHL: The Future Era

Taylor HallIn the eras of the NHL, each comprising roughly 25 years of hockey history, one of the most exciting periods to consider is the one ahead; the Future Era. In today’s game, scoring is going up as the game becomes faster, cleaner and younger, which is exactly what the NHL wanted. As teams continue to find out how to best utilize the salary cap, the game will become more competitive and player contracts will stay within the stratosphere of what’s reasonable, unlike some other sports.
