Another day, another oh-fer for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman continues to chase home run number 600. A-Rod has been stuck on 599 for almost two weeks and in that time, interest in him achieving that milestone has been overshadowed by interest in him not hitting it. Countless numbers of pictures have been taken of Rodriguez’s swings, but not one has been truly worth anything, and the annoyance is starting to show as of late.

If there were an award for Closer of the Year, San Diego’s Heath Bell would be a top candidate to take home the National League version of the hardware. Through July 24, Bell has been called upon to close out 31 games for the Padres and has been successful 28 times; averaging seven each month throughout the season. In fact, the last time he couldn’t get the job done was on May 26, when St. Louis touched him up for a run in a game the Padres ended up winning in 13 innings.

Diamondbacks racking up the K’s in a bad way

Can strikeouts be an indicator of standings? Going into Monday, the Arizona Diamondbacks had struck out 597 times; 90 more than any other team in baseball. They also have a firm hold on last place in the National League West and are the only team in their division with an under-.500 record. Their team batting average was a measly .252, good enough for fourth-worst in the National League, which is definitely not helped by their gargantuan K-total.

Have you ever wondered who the best closer in baseball is? Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 16 years or have a burning hate for all things Yankees, you would probably say that it’s Mariano Rivera. You’re probably right. Name one closer that’s had more success over the course of his career than the Yankees’ door-slammer. You can’t. However, Rivera is 40 years old now, and while he may have a few seasons left in his rubber arm, he’ll have to pass the torch someday.

How much can you do when you’ve already done it all? Lots, if you’re Zack Greinke. As everybody saw, the starting pitcher lit up the opposition and won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals, putting everybody else on notice that he’s officially arrived and ready to throw. And at just 26 years old, there’s still plenty of throwing left in the right arm of the Royals’ ace.

The Cuban defector signed a six-year, $30.25 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds in January and has been making all kinds of headlines. Since his arrival in Cincinnati, he’s made a strong effort to get to know his teammates and bond with them in the locker room. On the field, he’s been working hard to earn the millions that he’s been promised.
