Yzerman moving to Tampa

The Red Wing poster boy is swapping in his colors for Lightning silver. The announcement is somewhat surprising because since his retirement in 2006, many thought his appointment as VP of Hockey Operations with Detroit was to be apprentice to GM Ken Holland and would serve as a replacement. But it turns out that’s not the case. Yzerman is moving south and is ready to start the next chapter of his Hall of Fame career.

Team Canada going for gold

The Winter Olympics in Vancouver officially begin this Friday. The event’s most anticipated event, the men’s ice hockey tournament, starts on Feb. 16. Team Canada takes on Norway in their first game of a tournament that many Canadians not only hope, but expect will be a moment of national pride. Canada GM Steve Yzerman has assembled an all-star roster, but the most important of those might be his coaches. Leading Canada will be head coach Mike Babcock and assistant coaches Jacques Lemaire, Ken Hitchcock, and Lindy Ruff. These are the guys who will be held most accountable for Canada’s success, or possible lack thereof.

Olympic rosters set, now bring on Vancouver

Let the media frenzy begin! The 2010 Winter Olympics inched closer this week with the announcements of Team Canada and Team USA’s hockey rosters. Canadian GM Steve Yzerman unveiled his team in a massive conference on Wednesday, while Brian Burke gave his USA selections following the Winter Classic in Boston. Perhaps the most prestigious event of the Games, the men’s hockey teams have been unveiled and fans and media alike are weighing in on the choices, debating whether or not the chosen players will be good enough to compete for gold in February.
