Trio of youngsters ready to shine for the Edmonton Oilers

When the Edmonton Oilers start the 2010-11 season, they’ll ice a trio of 19-year-olds. First-overall pick Taylor Hall, World Juniors clutch man Jordan Eberle and Swedish phenom Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson are all set to make their NHL debuts with the NHL’s reigning worst-place team. Okay, Hall is technically 18-years-old, but he’ll turn 19 in November, so he gets a pass this time. He’s still the most likely of the trio to break camp with the Oilers anyway.

Youthful Avalanche trying to turn around misfortunes

The Colorado Avalanche have got young and got good. After missing the playoffs last season and not advancing past the second round since 2002, the Avs are in the final stages of a rebuild and may squeeze themselves into the playoffs, currently holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, but they do have some breathing room between them and Calgary. They’re also only five points back of third place, so things are still very much up in the air for Colorado.

Calder Memorial race is getting hot

This year’s NHL rookie race is heating up. With all of the hype surrounding last year’s Entry Draft and the debate about whether John Tavares or Victor Hedman would be taken first (it was Tavares by the Islanders; Hedman went second to Tampa Bay), it was the third-overall pick, Colorado’s Matt Duchene who is keeping the goal judge busy. His 21 goals and 24 assists both lead all rookies, and he’s 10 ahead of second-place Tavares on the points list.

Winter ends, Spring Training begins

This year, the end of the Winter Olympics will usher in spring, as the Major League Baseball Spring Training season kicks in on Tuesday when the Braves and the Mets throw the year’s first baseballs at each other. It’s easy to get caught up in the standings and to see your team do well through March and expect big things throughout the year as a result, but be careful with that. Spring Training is not so much about winning and losing as it is seeing what you have.

Rask and Varlamov topping rookie lists

The rookies in the NHL are making a huge impression on the fans nationwide. Everybody knows what John Tavares is doing for the Islanders as well as Niclas Bergfors in New Jersey, but there are two freshman goaltenders making a splash as well – Washington’s Semyon Varlamov and Boston’s Tuukka Rask. Both were first-round draft picks; Rask in 2005 and Varlamov in 2006, and both are dominating shooters across the league.
